Jimmy Dean is a brand that at one point was known for its sausage. In the modern age, they make an entire line of frozen breakfast foods, but you can still see some of their sausage legacy continuing through their sausage-based meals. One such example is their variety of Loaded Sausage Bites. We tried the Turkey Sausage, Egg & Cheese Loaded Sausage Bites not long ago, and that had us interested in checking out some similar offerings.
Today we’re diving into the Jimmy Dean Meat Lovers Loaded Sausage Bites, which are similar to the turkey sausage version, though with pork sausage and bacon rather than turkey sausage.
According to the package, you only need to pop these into the microwave for 40-50 seconds. When we reviewed the last batch, however, we ended up cooking them for double that time (about a minute and a half in total). We noticed the same thing this time around, which makes us wonder if these are intended to be refrigerated rather than frozen (we’ve been cooking them from frozen). You can read the full cooking instructions by scrolling down to the package scans at the bottom of this review.
These come out of the microwave a little bit oily. In fact, when we dumped the cup onto our plate, there was a small puddle of oil that ended up on the plate. You’ll probably want to eat these with a fork rather than your fingers. Otherwise, grab some napkins.
Flavor-wise, these are great. Jimmy Dean’s sausage definitely doesn’t disappoint here. It has an absolutely wonderful sausage flavor, with some spice and a little bit of sweetness to it.
Inside the sausage you’ll also find chunks of egg and cheese. We didn’t notice the egg all that much, but the cheese really does come through. Jimmy Dean uses a sharp cheddar here instead of the American cheese that they normally use, and it’s a great choice for these sausage bites.
This is not a substantial amount of food. Even so, it contains 290 calories (210 from fat) and 840 mg of sodium. That’s a lot, considering you could easily eat two cups of these bites in a sitting and still have room for more. We only had eight little balls in our package.
The Jimmy Dean Meat Lovers Loaded Sausage Bites are mostly sausage, which is what Jimmy Dean does best. That means these are really tasty, though one cup of sausage bites won’t be a substantial meal. This is more of a side dish that you’d serve with pancakes or French toast than a true meal. Still, we think these are pretty great, and we hope Jimmy Dean expands this line in the future.
