Ten of the Best Vegan Frozen Foods at Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe's

If you’re vegan and looking for some great frozen food options, Trader Joe’s has you pretty well covered. From delicious Indian dishes to pasta to faux chicken, there’s a little of something for everyone in the illustrious freezer aisles of your local TJ’s store. We’ve been reviewing Trader Joe’s foods for more than four years now, so we thought it would be useful to shine a spotlight on some of the best vegan options we’ve found so far.

Here are ten of our favorite vegan frozen foods that you can find at Trader Joe’s. Note that TJ’s tends to rotate out foods seasonally, so we can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to find all of these options year-round. Still, these are some tasty frozen foods that you can search for the next time you step into TJ’s.

Trader Joe’s Yellow Jackfruit Curry with Jasmine Rice

Trader Joe's Yellow Jackfruit Curry with Jasmine Rice

Without exaggerating, we can say that the Trader Joe’s Yellow Jackfruit Curry with Jasmine Rice might be the best vegan offering in Trader Joe’s freezer aisle. This starts out with a curry sauce that’s both spicy (thanks to a robust blend of spices) and creamy (thanks to the coconut milk), then it adds jackfruit, bell peppers, and eggplant for a flavor sensation that can only be described as “Wow!” And all of this comes with a side of jasmine rice. We’re getting hungry just writing about this!

Trader Joe’s Penne Arrabbiata

Trader Joe's Penne Arrabbiata

While pasta isn’t always safe for vegan-friendly diets (due to to its unending love affair with cheese), the Penne Arrabbiata is specially designed with vegans in mind. The sauce is a simple tomato-based affair, but it’s surprisingly rich and contains a bit of chili pepper for some extra kick. Some folks recommend adding greens to this, but we still enjoy it as is. There’s a lot to love in this simple dish!

Trader Joe’s Chicken-Less Mandarin Orange Morsels

Trader Joe's Chicken-Less Mandarin Orange Morsels

The non-vegan version of this dish, the Mandarin Orange Chicken, is one of Trader Joe’s most beloved frozen foods. However, vegans and vegetarians won’t ever get to enjoy it on account of the real chicken meat. That’s why the food wizards at TJ’s created a vegan-friendly version, the Chicken-Less Mandarin Orange Morsels. And they’re absolutely amazing. This is the perfect faux meat to serve over a hot dish of fried rice.

Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Gnocchi

Trader Joe's Cauliflower Gnocchi

The food world has been getting really crafty with cauliflower lately, and the Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Gnocchi is one of the most creative takes we’ve seen thus far. What’s in the bag is fairly simple: just a basic cauliflower-based gnocchi pasta with extra virgin oil and sea salt, though you can definitely slop your favorite sauce on top of this if you want something a bit more complex. No matter how you serve this innovative pasta, we think you’ll be thrilled with the results!

And we promise you, you haven’t seen the last of the cauliflower offerings on this list; there are more coming!

Trader Joe’s Misal Curry with Brown Rice

Trader Joe's Misal Curry with Brown Rice

This meal might not look like much, but we were quite surprised by how flavorful and spicy the Misal Curry ends up being. It’s also a texture adventure, with a ton of variation to keep your mouth stimulated. This also has one of the strangest-sounding ingredients we’ve had: sprouted moth beans. Those might not sound appetizing at all, but we ended up loving them. All in all, this is a tasty dish for the adventurous vegan.

Trader Joe’s Mildly Spiced Organic Vegetable Burritos

Trader Joe's Mildly Spiced Organic Vegetable Burrito

Longtime Freezer Meal Frenzy readers were probably wondering when they’d see a frozen burrito on this list. We did start out with frozen burritos, after all, and we absolutely adore them still. So it should come as no surprise that we’re putting the spotlight on the Trader Joe’s Mildly Spiced Organic Vegetable Burritos. While so many frozen burritos contain cheese, this is a dairy-free option that’s anything but bland. There’s an absolute smorgasbord of veggies in the filling, and this ends up with a little bit of a sweet barbecue flavor (without actually having any barbeque sauce in it). We really enjoy these burritos, and we think you will too!

Trader Joe’s Soycutash

Trader Joe's Soycutash

The Trader Joe’s Soycutash might just be a simple bag of frozen veggies, but this is actually a wildly popular frozen food at TJ’s. And now that we’ve tried it, we can see why. It’s a simple blend of edamame, corn, and red peppers, but the quality is what really sets this apart. Even when cooked in the microwave, these veggies hold up extremely well, loaded with flavor and holding their soft-yet-firm consistency impressively well. If you haven’t yet tried the Trader Joe’s Soycutash, we definitely recommend grabbing a bag the next time you’re shopping at TJ’s. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Trader Joe’s Riced Cauliflower Bowl

Trader Joe's Riced Cauliflower Bowl

We told you we’d have more cauliflower options on this list!

Of course, while some folks will be all jazzed up over the cauliflower rice, the real star of the show here is the sweet potato chunks, which are loaded with flavor and have a texture that really drives us wild. You’ve also got some toasted tofu, marinated chickpeas, and roasted onions, along with a blend of tahini sauce, chili powder, and soy sauce to really amp up the flavor. While it might be the cauliflower that caught our eye initially, this dish is incredibly good all the way through. We do wish it had a little more kale and could be a little more filling, but neither of these complaints should steer you away from this amazing vegan-friendly bowl.

Trader Joe’s Organic Açaí Bowl

Trader Joe's Organic Açaí Bowl

We’re going to stray a little bit from the beaten path here to highlight the Trader Joe’s Organic Açaí Bowl. This is a tasty bowl of berries and granola masquerading as a dessert, and it comes packed with the benefits of the açaí berry superfood. Oh, and there are also coconut flakes to really bring this together. It’s definitely not a boring old bowl of fruit! While you can certainly heat up this bowl if you’d like, we found that it’s best served chilled.

Trader Joe’s Kung Pao Tempura Cauliflower

Trader Joe's Kung Pao Tempura Cauliflower

We couldn’t resist finishing off this list with one more cauliflower-based dish. The Trader Joe’s Kung Pao Tempura Cauliflower is the vegan-friendly alternative to the wildly popular Kung Pao Chicken. In fact, our non-vegan reviewers were boasting about how good that chicken was, so we made them try this to see how they compared. As it turns out, even our one reviewer who can’t stand the taste of cauliflower had to admit that this is one tasty dish. If that’s not a vote of confidence for this delicious frozen food, we don’t know what is.
