Jimmy Dean Delights Spinach & Egg White Plant-Based Patty & Frittata Sandwich Review

Jimmy Dean Delights Spinach & Egg White Plant-Based Patty & Frittata Sandwich

If you’ve been around the block a few hundred times, you might know the Jimmy Dean brand for their sausage. This is what made them famous, after all (besides being named after a legendary country singer, that is). Here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, though, our introduction to the brand was through their breakfast sandwiches. We love ourselves a tasty breakfast, and breakfast sandwiches rank pretty high on our list of fast and easy foods that we love to enjoy with a cup of coffee.

While we’ve been reviewing Jimmy Dean products for years now, we’ve yet to encounter a single vegetarian-friendly item in their entire line. Until today. Yes, Jimmy Dean now has a plant-based patty, and they’re using it to make breakfast sandwiches. Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to be checking out the Jimmy Dean Delights Spinach & Egg White Plant-Based Patty & Frittata Sandwiches today.

These come four in a box, and each sandwich is individually wrapped, as shown in the image below.

To cook one of these up, you’ll need to thaw it first. While you can certainly thaw them in the fridge overnight, you can also run a quick thaw cycle on your microwave. Whichever method you choose, the next step is easy: Pop a sandwich (wrapped in a paper towel) into the microwave for 70 to 75 seconds. Boom, all done! (If you want to read the cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

As you can see in the image below, each one of these sandwiches is comprised of five layers. There’s the English muffin bottom, then a plant-based patty, then a spinach frittata on top of that. Then you’ve got a layer of cheese and another piece of English muffin to complete the package.

Let’s just tackle the most controversial piece first and get it out of the way. The plant-based patty is, well… interesting. It’s made of beans, quinoa, and brown rice, and it definitely feels like a fake meat. It has that grainy feel to it, and it’s softer than a true meat. It also has an earthy sort of flavor to it. But on top of that is a sausagey snap that sort of hits a second or two after you bite into it. For a fleeting moment, your mouth tells you that this is real sausage — but then it bounces back to that sort-of earthy flavor.

We’ve tried Jimmy Dean’s frittatas before, and our opinion on them varies based on what you put inside them. In this particular case, we think they taste kind of bland and the consistency makes us a little squeamish. But when the frittata is mashed between a fake sausage patty and a layer of melted American cheese, the flaws fade into the background and the combined flavor ends up working really well.

For some reason, the English muffin this time around ended up being especially rubbery. The flavor was great, but the consistency was really hard to bite through. We’re not sure if this has something to do with the thickness of the sandwich, but we had a hard time biting all the way through a full sandwich.

One of these sandwiches contains 280 calories and 800 mg of sodium. While the calorie count isn’t bad, the sodium level is a bit high. That’s compounded by the fact that we think you could probably scarf down two of these suckers with a mug of coffee. If you do, those numbers are going to skyrocket.

The Jimmy Dean Delights Spinach & Egg White Plant-Based Patty & Frittata Sandwiches are pretty decent. Our carnivorous reviewers would prefer the real-sausage version of this breakfast food, but we’d definitely recommend it to vegetarians who have been wondering what the Jimmy Dean brand is all about.
