Over the years, we’ve grown pretty fond of the Jimmy Dean brand of frozen breakfast foods. We were introduced to the brand via their breakfast sandwiches, but we’ve tried all sorts of other Jimmy Dean items as well.
What we’ve never tried, however, is a Jimmy Dean breakfast burrito. Well, dear readers, that changes today, for today we’re cracking open a box of the Jimmy Dean Meat Lovers Breakfast Burritos. This box contains four of these suckers, and they’re all just waiting to be devoured by our ravenous staffers!
Heating up one of these burritos is a cinch. Just open one up (they are individually wrapped), get it wrapped up snugly in a paper towel, then microwave it for about 90 seconds. The box says 75-85 seconds, but we found 90 seconds to be the perfect time for us. Of course, your experience might vary depending on the power level and consistency of your own microwave. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the box, scroll down to the bottom of this review and check out our package scans.)
Now, when we first cut open one of these burritos, we noticed that the filling can be a little bit watery. It’s not the ideal consistency, but once you actually take a bite, the flavor might make you forget about all that. At the very least, it will allow you to have some forgiveness in your heart.
Primarily, this is due to the wonderful cheese sauce. It’s creamy and rich, and we’d go so far as to call it craveable. It’s a blend of cheddar, parmesan, and mozzarella, and it’s paired with even more melty cheddar to really complete the package. We really like the cheese blend here.
And the sausage is fantastic. It has a syrupy, almost cinnamon-y sweetness to it, which contrasts with the savory cheese filling. It’s the perfect combination of breakfast flavors to stuff inside a tortilla.
On top of that, you’ve got some scrambled egg chunks, which are really nothing to write home about. They’re not bad, but they’re also not the main event here. In fact, when we pulled out pieces of egg to sample them on their own, they were still drenched in sauce so we only tasted the delicious cheese sauce. It’s hard to complain about that.
What’s a bit easier to complain about, though, is the nutritional content. These are not designed for dieters. One burrito contains 340 calories and 920 mg of sodium. Since a single burrito isn’t very filling (we think you could easily scarf down two with a mug of coffee), those numbers are pretty extreme.
While the Jimmy Dean Meat Lovers Breakfast Burritos might have some flaws, they’re still surprisingly tasty. We wish the filling were a little bit less watery, but it’s delicious enough to make up for that. Of course, if we could change just one thing about these burritos, it would be to magically reduce that calorie count (and the sodium level too, if we could make a second change). That said, these are some mighty fine breakfast burritos!
