Trader Joe’s Big Soft Pretzels Review

Trader Joe's Big Soft Pretzels

The Trader Joe’s Big Soft Pretzels are pretty much always right there in the freezer aisle at TJ’s. We love pretzels (who doesn’t?), but for some reason, we’ve been passing these by for years now. We really can’t explain it, folks; it just keeps happening.

So we went out of our way to put an end to this madness. Today is the day when we finally check out the Trader Joe’s Big Soft Pretzels.

These are super super fast to cook, though there’s a little bit of prep work involved. Once you preheat your oven, you’ll need to empty the included salt packet onto a plate, give a pretzel a spritz of water, then place it facedown in your salt pile. Flip it over, put it on a pan, and bake it for about four minutes. (To read the full cooking instructions straight off the bag, check out our package scans at the bottom of this review.)

These come out of the oven just a little crispy on the outside, but warm and soft on the inside. If you ask us, that’s pretzel perfection! The flavor is good too. These remind us of the pretzels you buy at the food court at the mall. To replicate that flavor at home is a grand experience, though these are more of a guilty pleasure than a gourmet one.

Of course, no soft pretzel would be complete without some dipping sauce. There is no sauce included with these pretzels, but we added our own queso, which complemented the pretzels wonderfully. You could also try mustard, as the package suggests, but we think queso (or a nacho-style cheese) is the real deal here.

One of these pretzels contains 220 calories, which is no big deal, and without salt, each one contains 440 mg of sodium. However, once you add the salt, things tend to get a bit more… interesting? Adding salt causes the sodium level to jump to 2,380 mg, which is just out of this world. If you’re trying to cut your sodium, you might want to skip the salt.

The Trader Joe’s Big Soft Pretzels are a great way to re-create the “mall pretzel experience” in the comfort of your own home. These are quick to make and tasty. We don’t know why we waited so long to check these out, because we’ve always suspected that we’d like them. Now we know for sure. Just be careful of that sodium blast, because it’s a doozy!
