While we’re very much in the business of reviewing frozen foods, we have a tendency to forget that reviewing ice cream is actually part of that business. Thankfully, we suddenly remembered that during our most recent Trader Joe’s shopping trip — we walked back to the frozen food aisle and grabbed ourselves some ice cream. And hey, it’s our job to eat it!
Today we’re checking out the Trader Joe’s Mint Chip Ice Cream. Now, this is certainly not our first time reviewing a TJ’s ice cream, but in our ice-cream-forgetting memory lapses, we’ve been passing over this classic ice cream choice time and time again. That ends today.
As you can see in the image below, this is a lot less green than we were expecting it to be. Instead of a minty green “Shamrock Shake” color, it’s mostly white with just a little tint of green (which is subtle enough that you might not even notice it in the photograph). In the right lighting, you could probably convince someone this was actually vanilla ice cream.
However, once they took a bite, they’d learn the truth. While this might not look minty at a glance, the flavor is very rich. The creamy consistency with the strong mint flavor is an absolute dream combo, and this batch of ice cream pulls it off with exceptional skill.
Another surprise was just how big the chocolate “chips” are. We’re used to the thin flakes you’ll find in most “chippermint” ice cream — these things are actual chunks of chocolate. And they’re great! The overall flavor of this ice cream sort of slowly transitions from mint to chocolate as the ice cream melts away to reveal the slower-melting chocolate inside. It makes every bite a flavored journey of sweetness.
The Trader Joe’s Mint Chip Ice Cream is yet another homerun for the ice-cream-making folks at TJ’s. This is a rich, decadent, indulgent batch of the frozen goods, and anyone who loves mint and chocolate owes it to themselves to check this out. We don’t know why it took us so long for us to get around to reviewing this, but now that we did, we can definitely recommend it to our ice-cream-eating readers!
