Trader Joe’s Mushroom Medley Review

Trader Joe's Mushroom Medley

Some folks might take a look at the Trader Joe’s Mushroom Medley and see a boring ol’ bag of mushrooms. However, we think there’s no such thing as a “boring” bag of mushrooms (that actually seems like something a wizard would carry around in a leather pouch), so we’re really excited to check this out today. There’s a fungus among us, and our excitement is humongous!

These mushrooms aren’t necessarily designed to be eaten on their own, though you certainly can serve up a batch as a side dish. For the sake of this review, we did eat a handful of mushrooms without adding anything, but we later cooked up an omelet to really make use of these slices of earthy goodness.

If you want, you can heat these in the microwave. We decided to pan fry ours with a little bit of grapeseed oil, though, which we think leads to a much better batch of mushrooms. (If you want to read the cooking instructions straight off the bag, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

One thing we should point out is that there are a few really thick chunks of mushroom in this blend, and those will need a little bit of extra attention to make sure they cook all the way through. They’re surprisingly thaw-resistant, and you don’t want blocks of ice in the center of your mushrooms!

That said, these are wonderful. The flavor is extremely rich, despite this being just a simple mushroom blend. There is, of course, a little bit of olive oil and some garlic, as well as parsley to add just a bit of green to the mix. This means the mushrooms do end up a little bit oily (especially when you add some extra oil to the skillet when you cook them). That’s not a bad thing, though, and it ends up working out pretty well for these mushrooms.

These are so tasty that we had a hard time saving some for our omelet project! We did eventually scramble up some eggs, toss in some mushrooms, and cover the whole thing with shredded Mexican-style cheese. It was a really great combo, though we could see swiss cheese being a better topping, and some fresh green bell peppers would have really made this sing! Still, the mushrooms were definitely the star of this omelet show.

The Trader Joe’s Mushroom Medley is so good that we could eat these mushrooms as a snack without adding a thing. However, if you add these to an omelet or sandwich, you’re going to level up your meal. These are absolutely great, and we can see them becoming a staple of our mealtime cooking experiments.
