Trader Joe’s Cold Brew Coffee and Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert with Tapioca Pearls Review

Trader Joe's Cold Brew Coffee and Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert with Tapioca Pearls

We’re at it again. It’s been a hot, hot summer, and we’ve been craving some cool, cool treats to get us through it. And that means we’ve been cramming our faces with delicious ice cream. But what about the Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers who can’t consume dairy? Well, for them we’ve picked up some of the Trader Joe’s Cold Brew Coffee and Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert with Tapioca Pearls. It’s quite the name!

This is made with coconut milk instead of real milk (or cream), and we found the texture to be more coarse than a true ice cream. This has more of the consistency of a re-frozen slushy. Trader Joe’s does describe it as a “non-frozen dessert” rather than a dairy-free ice cream, but we imagine that some snackers might find the lack of creaminess off-putting.

We’d describe coffee and boba tea as two of life’s great pleasures, so this is the kind of thing that should be right up our alley, even if it doesn’t really mimic ice cream. However, our staff was pretty split when it came to this dessert. Some team members loved the strong coffee flavor and the chewy, mochi-like bites of boba. Others found themselves longing for a bite of regular old ice cream. We suspect that this is going to be a pretty polarizing treat. Whether you like this product will depend on your taste, texture preferences, and feelings about boba.

Before digging in, you should also be aware that this frozen dessert isn’t just coffee flavored. It’s made with real coffee, which means the caffeine could keep you up if you dig in late at night. Of course, if you’re looking for a cool and refreshing mid-day boost, this could be the perfect snack for you.

So how about those calories? Well, there are three servings per container, and each of those servings contains 230 calories. And this, of course, means the full carton contains 690 calories. If you’re looking to indulge, there are definitely worse ice cream options. Then again, that’s still quite a lot — you’re probably best sticking with the recommended serving size. Since the boba balls are fairly chewy, it’s easy to enjoy this one slowly, so overindulging might not be a huge temptation for you.

The Trader Joe’s Cold Brew Coffee and Boba Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert with Tapioca Pearls isn’t a treat for everyone. This vegan-friendly product has a great coffee flavor, but the combination of coarse and chewy textures might be off-putting to some. The caffeine content is also something you’ll want to watch out for. That said, if you don’t mind taking a chance on a more unusual product, this unique treat is definitely worth a try.
