PF Chang’s Home Menu Mongolian Style Beef Review

PF Chang's Home Menu Mongolian Style Beef

One of the best-kept secrets here at Freezer Meal Frenzy is that after Trader Joe’s, the PF Chang’s Home Menu brand is the most popular frozen food brand for our readers. Well, we suppose this secret isn’t so well-kept now that the cat’s out of the bag! Because of the popularity of this brand, we feel it is our duty to seek out more of its offerings so we can give our honest opinion.

Today, we’re going deeper into that particular rabbit hole, as we’re checking out the PF Chang’s Home Menu Mongolian Style Beef. We’ve honestly been meaning to review this for a long time now; we just keep getting distracted by other food. There’s so much frozen food, and so little time!

Anyway, heating this takes a bit more effort than your standard microwavable meal, but it’s really not that difficult. You’ll basically heat up a skillet and toss the meal into it. Heat it covered for about four minutes, then uncover and stir for five or six more. It takes about ten minutes, and pretty much anyone can do it! (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the bag, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

The main event here is the sizzling hot beef, and for the most part it satisfies. It’s a little chewy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we did have a piece or two that were kind of dry in the middle. That’s not the worst thing in the world, but it does mean this was a little bit less juicy than we were hoping it’d be.

But that might not even matter, because the sauce here is top-notch. It’s a soy-based concoction with a sweet edge to it, giving it an almost barbeque-style flavor. It’s really good, and it does the beef a world of good. It’s really hard to compare about the small flaws in the beef when it’s slathered in this tasty sauce.

To round out the meal, you’ve got some veggies. We were quite surprised by how well the earthy tones of the string beans actually went with the sweetness of the sauce. It provides a really lovely contrast that makes every bite oh-so-craveable. The string beans make up a vast majority of the veggie portion here, though you should also expect to find a few chunks of onion and red bell pepper tossed into the mix.

According to the bag, there are two and a half servings inside, though we think it’s not difficult to polish off the whole bag in a sitting. Our reviewer did, though they did admit to being overly stuffed afterward. Sometimes, our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, as the old expression goes. If you stick with the bag’s recommendation, you’ll be downing 230 calories and 710 mg of sodium. If you follow the bad example set by our reviewer, that jumps up to 590 calories and 1,820 mg of sodium.

The PF Chang’s Home Menu Mongolian Style Beef is pretty gosh darn tasty. While the beef isn’t perfect, the sauce is good enough to make up for it, and the string beans really add something special. While you probably don’t want to pig out and eat the entire thing in a sitting (like our reviewer did), you’ll certainly be tempted to. This makes for a delicious meal!
