Banquet Mega Meats Kansas City BBQ Recipe Boneless Chicken Strips Review

Banquet Mega Meats Kansas City BBQ Recipe Boneless Chicken Strips

There’s nothing like a home-cooked chicken dinner to really hit the spot after a long day of work. Then again, the whole cooking part of the process can really dampen your enthusiasm for such a meal. Thankfully, there are plenty of frozen solutions to get you a hearty chicken dinner without hours of prep work.

So today we’re trying yet another option in a very long line of frozen chicken dinners, the Banquet Mega Meats Kansas City BBQ Recipe Boneless Chicken Strips. This features a batch of BBQ chicken strips and a side of mashed potatoes. We’re pretty excited to dig into all of this food!

First, though, we must cook it up. The process is a little bit more involved than for a normal frozen meal, since you’ll have to take the chicken strips out of the tray, microwave the mashed potato portion for a minute, then put the chicken strips back in and cook the whole thing for another two and a half to three and a half minutes.

Of course, you could also use the oven, but that will take you 40 to 45 minutes. We opted for the microwave for this review, because we didn’t feel like waiting that long. Now, very recently we tried another meal that had mashed potatoes in it, the Stouffer’s Pub Classics BBQ Recipe Burger with Bacon. With that meal, we found the eight-minute cook time to be absolutely brutal for those mashed potatoes. We were really hopeful to make up for that experience by chowing down on some potatoes that weren’t overcooked to the point of destruction.

The good news is that our four-and-a-half-minute cook time was much easier on these potatoes than the eight-minute cook time was on our last batch. The bad news, however, is that these potatoes just aren’t very good. They sort of just melt into a soft mess that’s both watery and gravelly. The texture is just awful. The flavor is bland yet buttery, like someone tossed in a bunch of extra butter because they knew these didn’t have a lot of flavor.

But you’re not here for the potatoes; you’re here for the chicken. Thankfully, that portion ends up better than the mashed potatoes. But even so, this chicken is hard to recommend. It ends up with a rubbery texture, and the breading comes out kind of soggy.

The flavor is alright — it’s a subtly sweet BBQ sauce with just a bit of kick — but there really isn’t much of it here. The flavor hits your tongue, then vanishes into the night, never to be heard from again. The cover makes it look like these are slathered in a tasty sauce, but in reality, there’s just a slightly sticky breading on the outside of a rubbery batch of chicken.

Also, we take some issue with calling these chicken strips. We think of strips as longer pieces, while these would be more accurately described as slightly oversized nuggets. This is the very least of our concerns about this meal, but we felt like we should air our grievances nonetheless.

As you’ve probably guessed, this is no diet food. This meal contains 560 calories, but that’s not the worst of it. If you thought that calorie count was bad, get a load of the sodium content: 2,160 mg. Boy howdy, that’s some sodium.

The Banquet Mega Meats Kansas City BBQ Recipe Boneless Chicken Strips are pretty disappointing. While we do appreciate having a quick option to satisfy the occasional craving for chicken dinner, this is not something we see ourselves returning to anytime soon. Of course, if we do return to it at some point, we think we’d try cooking it in the oven, because so much of our complaints deal with how soggy everything is.
