Trader Joe’s Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Bites Review

Trader Joe's Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Bites

We love oatmeal, and we love eating with our hands. Unfortunately, those two things don’t go together very well… At least, they didn’t until Trader Joe’s came along and created the Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Bites. The bag boasts that these little treats are “Oatmeal you can hold in your hands.” That sounds pretty neat, right?

So we picked a gloomy spring morning to crack open a bag of these and give them the ol’ Freezer Meal Frenzy taste test.

First, though, we’re going to have to cook these. The bag lists several different cooking methods, from air fryer to conventional oven to microwave. We’ve mentioned before that we actually don’t have an air fryer in the Freezer Meal Frenzy office, so we went with the conventional oven for these. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for these oatmeal bites, check out our package scans at the bottom of this review.)

These are actually super simple. It’s just a batch of oatmeal mixed with an apple-cinnamon filling, rolled up inside a slightly crispy dough crust. That means these are dry and grainy on the outside, and kind of moist and sticky in the middle.

The flavor is a bit subtler than we were expecting. We were expecting this to be a sweetness overload (we’re thinking of apple pie or cinnamon oatmeal), but the flavor sort of creeps up on you. When you first bite into one of these, you taste the breading, but then the sweeter tones start to come up as you chew. By the time you’re ready to swallow a bite, the apple flavor has really started to dominate the palate.

That’s actually a good thing, we think, because these could have easily become overwhelming as you eat multiple oatmeal bites in a row, but they don’t. You will probably want to have a glass of milk on hand, because the dry outer layer and the sticky filling just begs to be washed down with something creamy. But our reviewer did eat the whole bag in one sitting without complaining about them being too rich.

Our bag contained exactly nine oatmeal bites. That’s important to note because a serving size is just three, which means there were three full servings in a bag. So the appealing 240 calories and 410 mg of sodium becomes 720 calories and 1,230 mg of sodium if you eat all nine. Yikes!

The Trader Joe’s Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Bites are very tasty. We do wish the calorie count were lower, but at the same time, these do feel pretty heavy. Our reviewer was pretty darn stuffed after eating nine of these in a sitting, and they told us they probably overdid it a bit. As far as flavor goes, though, these are a real winner in our book!
