Artisan Bistro Egg, Pork Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Burrito Review

Artisan Bistro Egg, Pork Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Burrito

Here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, we cut our teeth on frozen burrito reviews. For those who don’t know the story, we found ourselves with a boatload of burritos, so we decided to start taking notes on which ones we liked and which ones we didn’t. Instead of keeping a burrito notebook or anything like that, we decided to post our thoughts on the Internet. Thus Freezer Meal Frenzy was born.

We very quickly decided to review more than just burritos, but in our early brainstorming phase, the first iteration of Freezer Meal Frenzy was exclusively about frozen burritos.

Whenever we encounter frozen burritos we’ve not yet tried, we do try to turn those into burritos we have tried. So when we saw the Artisan Bistro Egg, Pork Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Burrito at our local co-op, we knew right away that we needed to try it, and that we needed to share our thoughts. In fact, we might have even shed a single nostalgic tear as we thought back to the early days of Freezer Meal Frenzy.

Now, you can cook this in the microwave if you want to, but there’s something about the word Artisan that made us go with the oven method for this burrito. It might also be because we were feeling nostalgic and thinking back to our early days when we cooked most of our burritos in the oven instead of the microwave. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for both the oven and the microwave, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

We’ll say right away that the oven might have been unnecessary here. We found the shell to get just a little too crispy for our tastes, so we think the next time we try an Artisan Bistro burrito, we’ll probably just nuke it.

That said, the flavor here is quite good. Normally, we expect the meat portion of a frozen burrito to be pretty meagre, but here the pork sausage takes center stage. This is a really tasty sausage that definitely has those subtly sweet pork undertones. This doesn’t have that “snap” that a lot of breakfast sausage has, but it’s still pretty dang tasty. And the fact that the portion size is so generous really puts us into a good mood. In fact, Artisan Bistro is giving Jimmy Dean some serious competition in the breakfast sausage department.

The cheese here is cheddar, and there’s enough of it to have an impact on the overall flavor, which is a good thing. With some breakfast burritos, the cheese is kind of an afterthought; that’s not the case with this burrito.

The scrambled eggs are maybe just a tad watery, but we didn’t mind so much because they kind of just hide in the background while the sausage and cheese does all the talking. The eggs are really here to justify the word Breakfast in the title, and really, that’s all we need.

One burrito contains 370 calories (150 from fat) and 810 mg of sodium. Those numbers are a bit high, especially since this burrito isn’t very big and we could definitely see someone eating two in a sitting.

The Artisan Bistro Egg, Pork Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Burrito is a very competent burrito that pairs well with a cup of coffee. If you want a super-eggy burrito, this isn’t it, but if you’re looking for something that’s loaded with sausage, this is a good pick.
