Sundae Shoppe Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream Review

Sundae Shoppe Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream

If you’ve been reading a lot of Freezer Meal Frenzy lately, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve been reviewing a whole bunch of fall food items from Trader Joe’s and Aldi. Well, we’re not ready to slow down yet, as we’ve got more pumpkin goodness to put into our mouths.

Today, we’re checking out the Sunday Shoppe Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream, which is a twin sibling to the Apple Cinnamon Ice Cream (which we reviewed just a few days ago). We couldn’t try one and not the other, so today we’re scooping up some pumpkin-flavored ice cream to see what it’s all about.

Now, this is a strange flavor combo that messes with our heads a bit. We’ve eaten plenty of pumpkin pie that has vanilla ice cream plopped on top of it, so pumpkin and ice cream do blend decently well, flavor-wise. However, with this ice cream, you don’t have the warm pumpkin filling to serve as a contrast for the cold creamy ice cream — it’s all cold here. So it’s like you took that piece of pumpkin pie with ice cream on it, then froze the whole thing. Our brain keeps telling us there should be something warm inside, but we never ever get to it.

But maybe we’re just being weird here. We’re sure there are people who won’t experience cognitive dissonance when they eat this ice cream, and those people will find a lot to love. This does taste nice and sweet, and the spice part of “pumpkin spice” is enough to drive the whole thing home.

This also feels a bit “fluffier” than a lot of other ice cream we’ve tried. It’s not as dense as we were expecting it to be, but it has a pleasant, almost dreamy consistency.

The carton recommends a third of its contents as a serving. If you eat that, you’ll be downing 180 calories. But if you somehow manage to gobble down the whole carton in a sitting, you’ll be up to 550 calories. Of course, we don’t think you will eat all this at once — it’s not quite as craveable as something like, say, the Trader Joe’s Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream (which we really struggle to stop eating!)

The Sundae Shoppe Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream makes for a decent fall treat, but we definitely prefer the apple version to this one. We just think the pumpkin spice flavor doesn’t blend quite as well with the ice cream as the apple cinnamon flavor does. Still, we do think this is worth trying at least once this fall season. You never know when it will be gone for good!
