Trader Joe’s Vegan Thai Green Curry with Tofu Sheets, Vegetables and Jasmine Rice Review

Trader Joe's Vegan Thai Green Curry with Tofu Sheets, Vegetables and Jasmine Rice

As autumn descends upon us and the weather begins to cool, it’s lovely to wrap up in a blanket and sit down with a hot bowl of curry. That’s exactly what we’re doing today, since we’re checking out the Trader Joe’s Vegan Thai Green Curry with Tofu Sheets, Vegetables and Jasmine Rice.

We were feeling a little impatient when we pulled this out of the freezer, so we were happy to see that there were microwave instructions on the box. Plus, it only takes five to six minutes. Score! (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

Admittedly, this doesn’t look like we were expecting it to. The picture on the box shows what almost looks like a bowl of soup, while the actual meal comes in two separate compartments. That’s not a big deal; we were just a little surprised when we opened the box.

The absolute star of this show is the green curry sauce, which ends up tasting creamy, sweet, and spicy at the same time. It’s hard to describe the journey this took our taste buds on, but just know that it’s an incredible combo that really hits hard.

We were also surprised by how flavorful the carrot chunks are, but these are some of the best carrots we’ve ever eaten. That’s partially because they soak up some of the sauce, which enhances the flavor of everything it touches. We’re not people who typically crave carrots, but if all carrots tasted like this, we probably would be susceptible to frequent carrot cravings. These really are amazing.

As a vegan-friendly meal, there’s no meat or paneer cheese here; instead, you’ve got sheets of tofu. Those are pretty decent too; they’re maybe just a little rubbery for our tastes, but they still do have a decent texture and flavor. Of course, we only had two pieces of it in our entire meal (with a smaller third chunk that looked like it probably broke off one of the bigger pieces), so the tofu wasn’t a huge part of this meal.

This comes with a side of jasmine rice. The rice on its own is a little starchy, but it doesn’t have a lot of flavor on its own. That’s totally fine, though, as the rice is meant to serve as a bed for the curry sauce. The best way to enjoy this meal is to mix everything together and eat it as a combo rather than as two disparate parts.

So how spicy is this? Well, we thought it was pretty dang spicy. This is the tongue-tingles-and-cleared-sinuses kind of spicy. We should point out that the Freezer Meal Frenzy office is located in Minnesota, and that our sensibilities swing midwestern, but for our northern mouths, this meal has some serious kick.

This meal isn’t exactly diet-friendly. With 470 calories and 680 mg of sodium, it probably won’t completely ruin a diet, like some other frozen meals we can think of, but it’s also not quite as low in calories as some of TJ’s more calorie-conscious options.

The Trader Joe’s Vegan Thai Green Curry with Tofu Sheets, Vegetables and Jasmine Rice is the perfect meal for a chilly evening. Seriously, this stuff tastes amazing, and we definitely hope to get back to TJ’s soon to buy some more of it.
