Mama Cozzi’s Thin Crust Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza Review

Mama Cozzi's Thin Crust Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza

We were wandering the aisles of our neighborhood Aldi store when we came upon a majestic sight: the Mama Cozzi’s Thin Crust Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza. As huge fans of frozen pizza — and reviewers of Aldi’s frozen food — we knew it was our duty to bring this back to the Freezer Meal Frenzy office immediately to see what it’s all about.

And yes, we know it’s only been a day or two since our last frozen pizza review, but sometimes you just get that pizza craving that won’t quit until you gulp down a slice or two.

Anyway, cooking this shouldn’t give you any problems. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, then pop in the pizza for 14 to 17 minutes. The instructions say to place the pizza directly on the center oven rack, but we used a baking sheet, per usual. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the back of the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

Now, we tend to be suckers for thicker crusts, and when we do thin-crust pizza, we prefer it pub-style (like the always-incredible Lotzza Motzza crust). This crust is thinner than we generally like, getting crispy and almost crackery. We think that ours probably got slightly less crispy than intended due to the baking sheet, but even so, this was a little too crispy for our tastes. Then again, it’s not like this pizza was being sneaky about its crust; it does have Thin Crust right there in the title after all…

Some cheeseburger pizza gets really creative, using a ketchup-based sauce or adding some mustard or even decorating the top with pickles. Sadly, this one doesn’t go quite that far, sticking with a pretty standard tomato paste sauce and tossing on some beef balls and bacon bits. Now, this is definitely not a dealbreaker for us, as we’ve had some pretty delicious pizza that stuck to the path well trodden. As long as the ingredients are high in quality, we can totally enjoy something like this.

Unfortunately, these ingredients aren’t that high in quality. For starters, the sauce and cheese are both pretty skimpy here — the sauce especially so. The cheese is a blend of mozzarella and cheddar, but there’s not enough of either for it to really matter.

So how about the meat? Well, the beef balls are pretty tiny. They do taste pretty decent if you pick off a piece and eat it on its own, but they’re really small. In fact, our commentary on the bacon is pretty much exactly the same — decent when tasted on its own, but too small in portion size to really make a difference. In fact, despite how thin the crust is, this pizza is mostly crust.

According to the box, 1/3 of this pizza is considered a serving size. We think it’s absurd that anyone would ever cut a pizza into thirds (or any multiple of three, like six or nine), and we tend to assume that most normal people will eat half a pizza in a sitting. And that means we’re going to have to get our calculator out.

If you follow the box’s serving size recommendation (however you manage that), you’ll be eating 370 calories and 760 mg of sodium. If you somehow Cookie Monster the whole thing in a sitting, you’ll be up to 1,110 calories and 2,300 mg of sodium. If you follow the advice of your trusty Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers and eat half a pizza (which we find likely), you’ll be at 555 calories and 1,150 mg of sodium.

Whew! All that math!

The Mama Cozzi’s Thin Crust Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza scores some points with us on account of simply being a frozen pizza, but we doubt we’ll be making this a staple of our diet. We’ve had way too many pizzas that are way better than this — heck, we’d even take a Bellatoria pizza over this one.

Darn! We kept eyeballing this one but couldn’t get motivated enough to actually buy it. And now it looks like it was the wise move. Awesome review!
