Trader Joe’s Mini Spicy Pumpkin Samosas Review

Trader Joe's Mini Spicy Pumpkin Samosas

We’ve really been feeling this fall season, checking out the seasonal offerings at both Aldi and Trader Joe’s. But we’re not done yet, folks! Now, we’re trying something that we’ve been pretty excited about ever since reading about it in the recent Fearless Flyer. That’s right, today it’s time to dig into the Trader Joe’s Mini Spicy Pumpkin Samosas.

These snacks might not be huge, but they sure look tasty. And, with a dozen mini samosas per box, there’s plenty to share — though sharing might be the last thing on your mind when it comes to these…

Anyway, cooking these is pretty simple. You can heat them up in the microwave if you want to, but that seems almost sacrilegious. These puppies deserve some oven lovin’, so that’s the cooking method we went with for this review. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for these samosas, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

Now, pumpkin definitely seems like a weird thing to stuff inside a samosa, but when you think about the flavor profile, it’s not that different from jamming sweet potato inside, and that seems like a pretty common combo (at least, our Google search brought up a ton of recipe results).

And really, this is an absolute genius-level move by the folks at TJ’s. The subtle sweetness of the pumpkin (and sweet potato — there’s some sweet potato in these samosas as well) makes for a lovely contrast with the back-of-your-throat spiciness of the spice blend here (garlic, ginger, turmeric, and then something generically referred to as “spice” by the ingredients list). The filling is incredible.

And that filling is stuffed inside a delicious pastry that ends up crispy on the outside and a little bit flakey all the way through. We’re guessing these would probably lose some of that crisp in the microwave, but when cooked in the oven the crispiness is pretty much perfect.

The box recommends four samosas per serving. That portion size contains 170 calories and 340 mg of sodium. However, if you chomp down the whole box at once, you’re up to 510 calories and 1,010 mg of sodium. And we promise you, once you start eating these, you’re going to be about as willing to share these samosas as Gollum would be to share the One Ring.

The Trader Joe’s Mini Spicy Pumpkin Samosas are a fantastic fall treat that samosa fanatics absolutely need to try. In fact, we’re already planning another TJ’s trip so we can pick up another box of these before they’re gone.
