If you’ve been reading Freezer Meal Frenzy lately, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve been on a pumpkin-fueled voyage, trying out the fall foods lineups from both Aldi and Trader Joe’s. It’s been quite a treat, we must say.
Today, we’re delving deeper into this project with the Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Sticky Toffee Cakes. This is yet another fall-exclusive offering from TJ’s, and fans are rushing to stores to gobble this one up before it’s gone. We’re lucky enough to have found some at our local Trader Joe’s store, but we’re not sure how long these will be available. They do seem pretty popular.
The box gives instructions for both the microwave and conventional oven. While we suspect they turn out slightly better in the oven, we were really curious about how kind the microwave would be to these toffee cakes. So for the first portion of this review, we used the microwave. (To read the full cooking instructions, scroll down to the bottom of this review and check out those package scans.)
We have to say, we’re pretty impressed by how this comes out of the microwave. The cake portion comes out super soft and moist without feeling soggy, and the gooey topping oozes down the edges. It’s wonderful, and it only needs to cook for about a minute.
And it tastes wonderful too. The toffee cake portion is absolutely delicious. We were curious about how the pumpkin would blend with the toffee cake, and now that we’ve tasted it we can attest that this combo is brilliant. The pumpkin flavor is subtle so it doesn’t overwhelm the toffee flavor, and this almost has some carrot cake vibes.
Then, of course, is that super sweet topping, which elevates the flavor to a whole new level. It’s super rich, but the sweetness is offset a little bit by the toffee cake.
Because a package contains two toffee cakes, we decided to heat the second one in the oven so we could compare it to the microwaved version. And we have to say, we hardly noticed a difference. The cake ended up just a little dry around the edges, and parts of the glaze turned just the slightest bit crispy. We honestly think we prefer the microwaved version, but the oven version is still fantastic.
Now, we probably don’t need to tell you that this isn’t a diet-friendly treat. One cake contains 460 calories and 430 mg of sodium, and these aren’t very big. That’s quite a commitment for such a little treat, but if you’re freaky for fall (like we are), then you’re probably willing to take the hit.
The Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Sticky Toffee Cakes are yet another fall homerun from the food wizards at TJ’s. These pair well with a strong mug of black coffee as well.
