We get fairly freaky for fall here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, so you’ll have to forgive us for forsaking our familiar freezer aisle and flinging ourselves footloose and fancy free into other sections of our local Trader Joe’s. We weren’t in the frozen food section at all when we stumbled upon the Trader Joe’s Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich; we were in the refrigerated section (near where the non-frozen burritos can be found).
Yes, we know that we’re primarily a frozen food review site, so we have little business tasting refrigerated food, but hey, it’s our site and we’ll do whatever the heck we want. Especially when it’s autumn and the air is filled with a witchy sense of mischief. Excuse us for acting a little… ahem… ghoulish.
Okay, okay, so enough of the alliteration and purple prose. We’re going to chow down on a sandwich today, and there’s nothing you can do to stop us! This actually comes highly recommended by the folks on reddit, so of course we had to try it for ourselves.
This is a sandwich that goes all out, and that starts and ends with the multigrain Rustico bread roll. This is an absolutely heavenly thing to eat. In fact, we’d love to take one of these rolls, rip it open, stick a piece of butter in the middle, then pop it into the oven for three or four minutes. This is the sort of bread that deserves the royal treatment!
Inside the bread, you’ve got a generous portion of seasoned turkey breast. This isn’t a thinly sliced lunch meat; this comes in thick, hearty chunks, and they have that leftover-Thanksgiving-turkey vibe. We really love this stuff, and it’s the perfect meat for this sandwich.
But then comes the tantalizing tug-of-war between the aged white cheddar and slices of actual apple. The cheddar has that bitter aged-cheese taste and a soft consistency, which contrasts beautifully with the sweetness and crunch of the apple slices.
All of this is topped with a lovely blend of mayonnaise and Dijon mustard, which really seals the deal for us.
And then there are some greens, which we believe are baby arugula. But really, they don’t add much aside from a little bit of color to this already packed sandwich. There’s a lot going on here, and it all comes together brilliantly.
If you eat half a sandwich, you’ll be dumping 250 calories and 520 mg of sodium down the ol’ gullet. But if you eat the whole sandwich (we think you will), then you’re up to 490 calories and 1,040 mg of sodium. Fall is usually the season when diets get tossed to the wind and we partake in the age-old art of feasting. But all things considered, these numbers aren’t as bad as they could be.
The Trader Joe’s Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich comes highly recommended by the Freezer Meal Frenzy review team. It’s delicious. And now that this review is posted, you no longer have to take reddit’s word for it. You still can, if you want to, but now you can also toss in the fact that the FMF crew has stamped their seal of approval on this as well.
