Whole & Simple Chicken, Cilantro & Lime Burrito Review

Whole & Simple Chicken, Cilantro & Lime Burrito

Since we’re so enthusiastic about frozen burritos here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, and since we added Aldi to our regular grocery shopping rotation, it was only inevitable that we’d eventually make our way to the Whole & Simple line. The only surprising thing about this is how long it took us to get to this point. We’ve been doing this for six whole years now! Can you believe it?

Anyway, today we’re tasting something from the freezer at Aldi, the Whole & Simple Chicken, Cilantro & Lime Burrito. At a glance, this reminds us a little bit of the Evol Cilantro Lime Chicken Burrito, which we reviewed way back in 2016. Ah, we were so much younger then!

Cooking this is simple, and the packaging gives options for both the microwave and the oven. While we used to get all fancy with our frozen burritos and use the oven, we know that most people are just going to nuke this, so we went with the microwave today. And really, if we’re being honest, we just didn’t feel like waiting 15 minutes for this little guy to cook. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

Now, we did encounter an issue, as you can see in the image above. Our burrito exploded while in the microwave, spilling its guts all over the plate. In the words of comedian Bo Burnham: “Do you think I want a messy burrito? No one wants a messy burrito. The whole appeal of a burrito is that all the main ingredients are contained within the confines of the tortilla.” And he’s right, but honestly, this isn’t a dealbreaker for us. It’s also our fault, because we ignored the part where the package said the oven was recommended.

We also found the tortilla to be especially chewy — almost leathery — but we admit that this is also our fault. Gosh darn, we should’ve used the dang oven.

As far as flavor, though, this burrito has it going on. We really love a subtle lime flavor to our chicken burritos, and this one really delivers in this regard. It’s not too overwhelmingly limey, but there’s a nice refreshing citrus undertone to this.

The chicken portion is definitely scant, but that’s pretty much what we’ve come to expect at this point. Frozen burritos really do like to skimp on meat. The good news, though, is that this doesn’t skimp on cheese. No, this isn’t as ooey-gooey as Red’s Organic Cheese Quesadilla Burrito, which is a cheese-filled dream, but there’s enough white cheddar in the mix to really add that creamy, gooey texture and deliver that smooth white cheddar flavor.

One burrito contains 290 calories and 460 mg of sodium, but it’s also not very big. We could definitely see someone chomping two of these in a sitting, so take that into consideration if you’re planning on making a meal of this.

The Whole & Simple Chicken, Cilantro & Lime Burrito is a pretty tasty offering from Aldi. We really enjoy the lime flavor and the gooey white cheddar, though we could have probably used a little more chicken. And the next time we have this burrito — there will be a next time — we’ll use the oven to cook it. We really learned our lesson.

Aldie has reduced the size to 4oz. This product is mostly burrito – thus the high carb count. Looks nothing like the picture on the box. Very little filling inside. I cut off the part of the burrito that was not touching the filling – ended up cutting off over 1/2 the burrito “wrap”. Still tasty but not worth the price. You’d have to eat at least 2 to have a decent meal.
