We’re always on the lookout for a good frozen General Tso’s chicken here at Freezer Meal Frenzy. We’ve tried quite a few over the years, from the delicious InnovAsian option to the not-so-great Smart Ones take on the dish to the cleverly named General Chang’s Chicken from PF Chang’s.
So when we started reviewing Aldi’s frozen food lineup, we knew that we were definitely going to have to try the Fusia General Tso’s Chicken. And today is the day we finally make this happen.
Before we dig in, though, we must cook this up. It isn’t all that difficult, though this batch of chicken features a bag of sauce that needs to be thawed while the chicken cooks. The preferred cooking method — well, the only cooking method given on the package — is baking this in a conventional oven. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the bag, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)
First off, we should point out that this comes with a ludicrous amount of sauce. There’s more sauce here than you’re ever going to need. Then again, we’d much rather have too much sauce than too little, so we know better than to complain about this.
Once you get the sauce and chicken mixed together, this smells very strongly of vinegar. And that’s more than just a scent — this ends up with a pretty strong vinegar flavor to it. We wish that part of the flavor palate were a bit less pronounced, because it does get in the way a little bit.
Aside from that vinegary taste, though, this is a pretty decent batch of Tso’s chicken. The chicken itself is really lovely, and the sometimes soft, sometimes slightly crunchy layer of breading really makes this stuff satisfying to bite into.
The portion size here is rather generous, and we don’t think you’ll be eating a full batch in a sitting, especially if you serve it over some fried rice. That said, we do think the package’s claim that there are five servings in this package is a little bit silly. If you do just eat 1/5 of the bag, you’re looking at 290 calories and 1,020 mg of sodium. That means that if you end up eating half the bag in a sitting, you’ll be up to 725 calories and 2,550 mg of sodium. Yikes!
The Fusia General Tso’s Chicken is a good-but-not-great Asian-inspired dish you can find in the freezer section at Aldi. While we’ve definitely had better (we do enjoy the InnovAsian take on this dish), this one offers a generous portion size and a whole lot of flavor. It’s too bad that so much of that flavor is plagued with a too-potent vinegary bite, because without that, we think this chicken would be pretty top-notch.
