Nordic Waffles Sausage, Egg & Cheddar Waffle Sandwiches Review

If you’ve never been to Minnesota, you might have never heard of the Nordic Waffles brand. But if you’re a Minnesota local, then you’re probably pretty excited to see this home state classic show up on your favorite frozen food review site, Freezer Meal Frenzy. Yes, today we’re checking out the Nordic Waffles Sausage, Egg & Cheddar Waffle Sandwiches.

For the uninitiated, Nordic Waffles is a staple of the Minnesota State Fair, where they sell their waffle-based breakfast sandwiches. But because the fair only lasts for a couple weeks out of the year, Nordic Waffles decided to package and freeze their sandwiches so they could sell them year-round. And that puts them smack in the middle of our wheelhouse. We do, as you’ve probably figured out by this point, specialize in frozen food.

We’re actually not sure how far out of the Twin Cities region these can be found. We’ve been surprised in the past to find some of our Minnesota local brands as far out as Indiana (Peace Coffee, for example), and since these can sometimes be found at Target stores, we suspect they spill into at least Wisconsin. Maybe they can be found in other Midwestern states, maybe not. But it doesn’t hurt to ask around if you’re in one of these states.

Anyway, the package lists out several different cooking methods, including the microwave. While it might be tempting to take advantage of that fast cook time, it is highly recommended that you use an oven or a toaster oven. You don’t want soggy waffles, do you? Do you? If you want to read the full cooking instructions, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.

However, we strayed off the beaten path. We thawed our sandwich in the microwave for about a minute, then we stuck it in the oven. Well, that’s not too far off the beaten path — this does say to thaw it beforehand, and it doesn’t say how to do that. So we guess thawing it in the microwave still counts as following the instructions.

Anyway, these are actually larger than they might appear when you spot them in the freezer aisle. They’re packed super tightly, so they look a little smaller when they’re in the package. Can you believe two waffle sandwiches fit in such a tiny package?

As for the flavor, these are absolutely heavenly. They take some egg patties and sausage patties, put just a little bit of cheddar cheese on top, then squeeze all of this into a waffle. The egg patties are fine — they’re pretty decent in quality — and the sausage is pretty darn good. It’s the waffle, though, that really ties everything together. This adds a sweet contrast to the savory filling, which hits those tastebuds in just the right way. It’s incredible how well all of this works.

The one complaint we have, though, is that we do wish there were more cheese. There’s just a tiny amount here, and we think that a gooey cheddar spilling out of the sides would have taken this to a whole other level. Don’t get us wrong, what’s here is still amazing, though.

Look, these aren’t made for dieters. One sandwich has 480 calories and 1,020 mg of sodium. Both of these numbers are pretty high, and those numbers describe just one sandwich. There are two sandwiches per package, remember. On the other hand, these are pretty filling. We don’t think you’re going to need to eat both sandwiches in a sitting, no matter how tempted you might be.

The Nordic Waffles Sausage, Egg & Cheddar Waffle Sandwiches are simply amazing. They’re a little bit spendy, and they’re going to be pretty difficult to find outside the Twin Cities area, but if you manage to stumble over these in a freezer aisle, don’t pass them by. These are one of the must-try items of Minnesota’s food scene.
