Rao’s Made From Home Chicken Alfredo Review

Rao's Made From Home Chicken Alfredo

We very recently fulfilled a longtime reader request by finally dipping our toes into the Rao’s brand of frozen entrées. We reviewed the Rao’s Penne Alla Vodka, which is easily the best take on vodka sauce that we’ve tried here at Freezer Meal Frenzy.

Today we’re delving deeper into the line with the Rao’s Made for Home Chicken Alfredo. Now, it’s easy to say their vodka sauce is the best we’ve reviewed because we haven’t reviewed a ton of vodka sauce-based frozen meals. But alfredo? We’ve reviewed a boatload of that, and we’ve found some real winners. The Stouffer’s take is particularly good. Rao’s really needs to put up a good product to impress us today. So let’s see how they do.

First, of course, we need to cook it. The box gives instructions for both the oven and the microwave, but we went with the much easier and much faster microwave for this. It just takes three minutes on high, and three additional minutes on 50% power. After that, a steamy dish of alfredo awaits. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for both methods, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

As you can see in the image above, this does come out looking a little bit watery, but if you let it cool for a few minutes, it should thicken up a bit.

With this pasta, Rao’s made the interesting choice of using spiral noodles. We really like this; not only is it super fun to look at, but the ribbed, hollow spirals have a lot of nooks and crannies for sauce to get trapped in. These noodles are an excellent choice for this meal.

Rao’s seems to be known primarily for their sauces, and that passion for sauce carries over into their frozen meals as well. The sauce here is amazing. This has a buttery, creamy flavor with hints of garlic. Unlike some sauces, which just use garlic to mask their bland flavors, this one uses the garlic to complement the buttercream flavor of the sauce, and it works incredibly well.

The chicken, unfortunately, is just alright. It’s a little too chewy, and while the meat has a decent flavor to it, there’s also kind of a weird aftertaste that we didn’t care for. Note that we didn’t have this problem with every piece of chicken in the dish, just about half of them. The other half were just fine.

This meal contains 470 calories and 770 mg of sodium. Both of those numbers are higher than we’d like, and in fact, both of them are higher than the stats for the Penne Alla Vodka. You probably don’t want to make this a regular part of your diet, but it’s definitely worth trying nonetheless.

The Rao’s Made for Home Chicken Alfredo is an astounding pasta with a less-than-amazing chicken. If the chicken were more consistent in its quality, this would be one of the best frozen pasta dishes that we’ve tried. As is, it’s an excellent frozen meal with one unfortunate flaw.
