Trader Joe’s Tres Leches Cake Review

Trader Joe's Tres Leches Cake

We’re treating ourselves today, folks! Today is the day we finally try the Trader Joe’s Tres Leche Cake! If you believe this article from Tasting Table, this is a dessert that’s not to be missed. So we’re definitely glad we’re not missing it! We’d love it if we never missed a single thing here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, but unfortunately we do miss things now and again. But the Trader Joe’s Tres Leche Cake is not one of those things!

Anyway, this can be found in the freezer aisle at TJ’s, but it requires no cooking. Instead, you’ll just need to let it thaw for a few hours at room temperature, or overnight in the fridge. It’s super easy, but we have to admit that we found the wait to be excruciating (we had planned on putting this in the fridge the night before, but we completely forgot, and didn’t realize it until we were getting ready to chow down).

Anyway, now that this cake has had some time to thaw, let’s take a big ol’ bite.

Trader Joe's Tres Leches Cake

First, we have to explain this a little bit. This is basically a big piece of cake that’s soaked in cream. So when you open up the package, you’ll have a bunch of cream spill out of it. That’s how it’s supposed to be, so don’t freak out.

That said, this is amazing. The cake is sweet, and the cream just makes that sweetness soggy and concentrated. It has a little bit of a sour flavor, which contrasts with the sweetness of the cake brilliantly While it sounds kind of weird in concept if you’ve never had a dish like this before, trust us when we say that this cake tastes awesome. And we don’t even mind the sogginess — that’s part of the appeal.

On top of all this, you’ve got a thick layer of whipped cream on top of it. We’d almost say that there’s too much whipped cream, but we don’t want to seem like we’re complaining. We like the fact that there’s too much whipped cream here. It’s just so dang good.

According to the package, 1/4 of this cake is a serving. We think that’s totally fair, because there’s actually a pretty generous amount of cake here. If you stick with this amount, you’ll be gulping down 360 calories and 130 mg of sodium. Are those extra calories worth it? We think so!

The Trader Joe’s Tres Leche Cake is an amazing treat that seems to be super popular right now. And we can totally see why — after our first bite, we were completely hooked. We’re glad the portion size is so generous, because when the craving hits tomorrow, we know we’ll have leftovers waiting in our fridge.
