Artisan Bistro Egg, Cheese & Uncured Bacon Breakfast Burrito Review

Artisan Bistro Egg, Cheese & Uncured Bacon Breakfast Burrito

Almost every frozen food brand has its white whales. You know, the one or two items in a line that are impossible to find, even though the rest of there items fill the shelves of every store you go to. With the Artisan Bistro brand, we’ve been able to easily locate the Egg, Pork Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Burrito, the Grilled Chicken Burrito, and the Grilled Steak Burrito.

However, one burrito in this line has been eluding us for months now: the Artisan Bistro Egg, Cheese & Uncured Bacon Breakfast Burrito. And wouldn’t you know it? We recently stopped at the grocery store to pick up some sundry items, and while we were there, we found a box of these things, just sitting there like it was no big deal.

Well, it was a big deal for the Freezer Meal Frenzy staff, because it means we can finally check out this long-hiding breakfast burrito. And there are few things we love reviewing more than breakfast burritos.

The package gives you two options for cooking this: the oven or the microwave. We’ve not had any problems with Artisan Bistro burritos in the microwave thus far, so we decided to go with that cooking method again today. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for this frozen burrito, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

Normally, when we review a burrito, we cut it in half to give our readers a nice cross-section so they can see what’s inside. That wasn’t necessary today, as this thing burst open while it was cooking, giving us a perfect window into its “guts.”

We have to mention that we found the shell to be particularly dry and chewy, which is definitely not ideal. It tastes fine — it’s your standard flour tortilla — but we aren’t big fans of how rubbery this one got.

Inside that shell you’ve got potato chunks, bacons, scrambled eggs, and some cheddar cheese. The potatoes and eggs are both fine — again, nothing that strays too far off the beaten path — but the bacon tastes kind of weird to us. It has a fake smokey taste to it, like it was doused in liquid smoke. And this flavor kind of permeates the entire burrito, transforming an otherwise decent burrito into something kind of off-putting.

And we also wouldn’t have minded a little more cheddar cheese.

This burrito contains 360 calories (140 from fat) and 800 mg of sodium. Those numbers are a bit high considering you could probably eat two of these in a sitting. They aren’t super filling.

The Artisan Bistro Egg, Cheese & Uncured Bacon Breakfast Burrito can be hard to find, but it might not be worth the effort. We were hoping for a pretty middle-of-the-road breakfast burrito, and what we ended up with was one with way too many flaws. While we’ve enjoyed the Artisan Bistro line up to now, we think this particular burrito is a miss.

Now, it’s possible that this just turned out badly because we used the microwave instead of the oven. We don’t think the oven would cure the smoke flavor problem, but you never know — sometimes oven cooking does miracles for the flavor of a dish. If we can manage to find another one of these, we might give it a second look and cook it in the oven. Until then, though, we can’t recommend this breakfast burrito when there are so many better options out there.

I love the breakfast burrito. I’ve learned to cook it only 1:15 and covered with a paper towel. If you overcooking , it will get hard and chewy. I like the ingredients and the fact it has no cilantro. I’m bummed that Kroger is no longer carrying it and I will need to travel 60 miles to restock.
