Trader Joe’s has been on an absolute tear lately with their ice cream selection. We recently fell in love with their Banana Pudding Flavored Ice Cream and the holiday-themed Candy Cane Joe-Joe’s Ice Cream. We’re getting festive again today with yet another chilly holiday selection, the Trader Joe’s Gingerbread Ice Cream.
Reviews of this treat seem a little mixed. The Daily Meal has pointed out some “skepticism” among fans, but Tasting Table claims fans are “thrilled.” Of course, both of these articles are just citing forum threads and social media posts, so they’re not exactly doing real science or journalism. We’ll also add that, according to the Trader Joe’s website, this is “a dessert that’s nothing short of homey, holiday magic,” but the Trader Joe’s website isn’t exactly an unbiased source here.
So which of those descriptions is correct? Well, there’s only one way to find out how tasty or not tasty this ice cream is, so let’s dig in!
This frozen dessert starts with a gingerbread flavored ice cream, then it adds gingerbread swirls and big chunks of ginger snap cookies.
We’re not sure why there are some people complaining about this, because we think it’s absolutely delightful. And not in that “we love it but can see why other people might not” way, but in a genuinely “this tastes like the holidays thrown into the sweetest ice cream imaginable” kind of way.
The ice cream? Delicious. The gingerbread swirls give it that little snap that really elevates the sweetness to new heights. And the cookie chunks add a really lovely texture to it all. They taste pretty dang good too.
There is one thing to complain about, though: The calorie count is a bit higher than we’d like. A serving is 1/3 of the container, and that will cost you 310 calories. If you “accidentally” sit down and eat the whole carton in a sitting, you’ll be up to 920 calories. And we promise you, there’s a very real temptation to do just that.
The Trader Joe’s Gingerbread Ice Cream is heavenly. This is a must-try treat this holiday season. You’re going to want to (ginger) snap this one up before it’s all gone.

this stuff rotted out all my teeth! i have only my 2 molars left and my husband left me because of this. I’m serious when I say this, gingerbread ice cream from trader joes changes lives for the worse. i would rather sell my left organ than buy ice cream from trader joes ever again!!! the owner slept with my husband AND my stepson so I told his wife and she laughed in my face saying he wasn’t the only one.. I hate gingerbread!
