This is it, folks. This is the big one.
Heggies invented the Six Pack Pizza back in 2001 — it was apparently the result of production employees putting four meats and two cheeses on a single pizza, and it went on to become Heggies’ best-seller. So today, we’re finally checking it out to see if it’s all that and a bucket of sauce.
Now, we did try the Heggies Deluxe Combination Pizza not long ago, but we had some problems with the quality of their mushrooms. Yes, as mushroom-lovers, this broke our heart. But since the Heggies Six Pack Pizza has no mushrooms on it, it gives the brand a chance to show off the best of what they’ve got. So we’re pretty excited to dig in. In fact, if we enjoy the 20-ounce version of this pizza, we might do a second review of the bigger version.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.
Cooking this is simple. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, then pop the pizza in for about 18 minutes. The directions say to place the pizza directly on the center oven rack, but we always use a baking sheet for our pizzas. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions for this frozen pizza, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)
We have to say right away that this is definitely the best Heggies pizza we’ve tried so far. It plays into all the strengths of the Milaca-based pizza-maker.
For instance, we’re not huge fans of Heggies’ sauce, because it tends to be kind of plain Jane. With the Six Pack pizza, though, the weak sauce allows the meat flavor to really come to the surface. And that’s good, because there’s a lot of great meat here.
The sausage is our favorite part of this pizza, and despite our growing love for the Bellatoria brand, we think we’d take Heggies’ sausage over Bellatoria’s any day of the week. The Canadian bacon comes in big slices that are loaded up with that salty flavor, which is enhanced by the bacon bits. And then there’s the pepperoni, which is sliced a little too thin for our tastes, but it’s still pretty good.
To bring all this together, the pizza is topped with gobs of mozzarella and cheddar. We like our pizzas to be ooey-gooey, and this one really oozes with cheese. In fact, this might be the cheesiest pizza we’ve had from Heggies so far. We love this.
Now, even though this is a smaller pizza, the package claims that there are four servings here. We think that’s kind of a stretch — we think you’ll probably eat 3/4 of this in a sitting, then save the rest for later. If you eat just 1/4, though, you’re going to be downing 370 calories and 1,220 mg of sodium. Yeah, that means there’s 1,480 calories and 4,880 mg of sodium in a full pizza. Holy smokes!
The Heggies Six Pack Pizza is a Minnesota staple for a reason; this is one seriously tasty pizza. Now that we’ve tried it, we can see why people in the cold northland hold Heggies in such high regard. No, this isn’t made for dieters, but if you’re really looking to indulge in a gooey pizza, you could do much worse than the Heggies Six Pack.
