Scott & Jon’s Broccoli Cheddar Mac Review

Scott & Jon's Broccoli Cheddar Mac

We have this theory about broccoli mac. Well, more of a hypothesis, really. It seems to us that broccoli mac was probably invented as a way to trick picky children into eating their broccoli without complaining. And it probably worked. But now, that the broccoli-mac-eating children have grown into full-fledged adults, they never really lost the taste for the stuff. So this is something that evolved from a children’s meal to a gourmet one.

What do you think? Does that seem likely?

Regardless of the origins of the stuff, today we’re delving back into the wonderful world of broc-mac, with the Scott & Jon’s Broccoli Cheddar Mac. The Scott & Jon’s brand tends to focus on shrimp-based meals, and they really excel in this department, but it does seem like they’ve been more and more willing to experiment with shrimp-less meals lately. We’re all about it, because the end result is that we get to eat more mac and cheese.

We should point out that this actually isn’t Scott & Jon’s first attempt at a broccoli mac. In fact, we reviewed the Scott & Jon’s Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Broccoli back in 2021, which is a slightly different take on this same dish. Yeah, it’s got broccoli and cheddar, but look at those noodles! This one’s got cavatappi pasta, while the old version had the spiraled rotini pasta. Big difference? Probably not. But we’re not going to let any of these S&J macaroni dishes slip under our radar.

This is super simple to cook: Just cut a small slit in the film, then pop the bowl into the microwave for three and a half minutes. Give it a good stir, and you’re good to go. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

Scott & Jon's Broccoli Cheddar Mac

Any batch of broc-mac is going to live or die by its broccoli content, and what’s here is pretty decent. It’s a little softer than we’d like, so it lacks that distinctive crunch of some of the highest-quality broccoli, but we wouldn’t call this soggy. It’s just soft. It tastes pretty good too.

The majority of the meal, of course, is a slightly spiraled cavatappi pasta, which is a really good choice, we think. While we do think shells are the gold standard for macaroni, we’re also impressed that this specific batch of pasta is good for both elbow enthusiasts and connoisseurs of the spiral.

The sauce is definitely less cheddary than we were expecting. That’s not a bad thing, mind you; it’s just didn’t match our expectations. But this stuff is actually better than we were expecting it to be, so that ends up being a huge win. This has a little bit of garlic in it, but it’s a tasteful amount rather than an overabundance. And there’s something a little bit sweet in the mix, but we’re not sure exactly what it is. This ends up being an impressively tasty mac.

What’s even more impressive is that Scott & Jon’s was able to create a super-tasty white-cheddar-based macaroni without making a calorie monster. As much as we love Devour’s white cheddar mac, we really can’t eat it often because of the calorie count. But this meal only has 290 calories, which makes it perfectly acceptable as a go-to lunch. It does have 700 mg of sodium, but that’s pretty much right on point for what we’d expect from a frozen meal.

The Scott & Jon’s Broccoli Cheddar Mac is a surprisingly delicious take on a healthier macaroni dish. While the broccoli isn’t perfect, it’s good enough at doing the job it sets out to do, and the sauce is absolutely wonderful. We can definitely see this meal becoming a regular part of our lunchtime routine.
