We’ve been making our way through Pagoda’s line of frozen egg rolls, and we found ourselves particularly enamored with their Chicken Egg Rolls. We thought this flavor blew the others out of the water, and we also speculated that these might become our default non-review egg rolls.
But then we spotted the Pagoda Mini Buffalo Style Chicken Egg Rolls at our local grocery store. What is this witchcraft? Combining some of our favorite egg rolls with the deliciousness of buffalo chicken? Can this be done? We aim to find out today!
Obviously, we had to taste these as soon as possible, so we picked up a box and brought them to the Freezer Meal Frenzy office to put them to the test.
But first, we must cook them. There are instructions on the back of the box for an oven, a microwave, or an air fryer, but the recommended method is the conventional oven. We decided to take Pagoda up on that recommendation today, so we cooked these in the oven. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)
Now, we knew going into these that they were going to be a little strange, and we weren’t disappointed. It’s super weird to have part of your brain going, “these are egg rolls” and another part going, “no, these are buffalo bites!” But somehow, the flavors come together here and work really well.
The shells have that crispy-on-the-outside-but-soft-everywhere-else consistency, and they have a nice egg-roll-appropriate flavor. But then there’s the filling, which really makes these things stand out. Yeah, it’s a buffalo-style filling, and yeah, it’s great! These are loaded with flavor, both inside and out, and we really enjoy what’s going on here.
They are just a tad bit spicy — it’s nothing that will bowl you over or anything, but there’s definitely a spice level. If your spice tolerance is absolute zero, then you might want to skip these, but we think most other folks will be able to enjoy them just fine.
According to the box, three egg rolls is a serving, which is a little weird since there are eight pieces in the box. If they just would have added a ninth egg roll, the math would have worked out! If you eat the three-egg-roll portion, you’ll be consuming 180 calories and 470 mg of sodium. That doesn’t sound too bad until you realize you could easily down a full box in a sitting, which puts you up to 470 calories and 1,250 mg of sodium. Not quite as sexy now, eh?
The Pagoda Mini Buffalo Style Chicken Egg Rolls are very good if you can just get around the fact that these are two flavors you wouldn’t expect to see crammed together. For some people, that’s the fun of food like this, but for others, these might be just a little bit too exciting. Calm down now, Larry!
