With So Right’s lineup of frozen food, we’ve come to terms with eating Asian food out of a cardboard box. But we were still on the fence about eating Mexican food this way when we picked up So Right’s Chicken Burrito Bowl. Without actually trying it, we couldn’t be sure if this was a good idea or a disaster. So we jumped right in.
This comes out of the microwave with a strange smell. Even though this doesn’t come in a plastic container, like most of the frozen meals we’re familiar with, it has a hint of a plastic smell to it. We’re not sure what the source of this smell is, but it makes us a little uneasy.
This may be a chicken burrito bowl, but assuming this has a decent portion of chicken is perhaps a bit optimistic. We only found a few chunks of the stuff, and the quality isn’t great.
The red chili sauce is the hero of this meal. While everything else is a little bit bland, the sauce really stands out. It’s flavorful and even a bit spicier than you might expect, and it works really hard to cover the blandness of the dish. The cheddar cheese helps out a little too, but there’s so little of it that it barely matters here.
The veggies are your usual suspects: corn, black beans, red bell peppers, and poblano peppers. None of these will astound you with their presence, and there isn’t much in the way of flavor here. It’s all pretty middle-of-the-road.
The rice is just your plain, average white rice. It’s kind of boring on its own, but the intent of this meal is really to mix everything together, which makes the rice a lot more interesting. When it’s backed by chili sauce and cheddar cheese, this rice isn’t boring at all.
So Right’s Chicken Burrito Bowl isn’t bad; it’s just ho-hum. Trader Joe’s has a much better burrito bowl in their lineup, and Devour has an incredible one. It’s hard to recommend So Right’s take on this frozen food when so many other companies do it better.
