Scott & Jon’s Garlic Butter Chicken Rice Bowl Review

Scott & Jon's Garlic Butter Chicken Rice Bowl

For us, Scott & Jon’s will always be known for their microwavable shrimp-filled bowls. We don’t know many frozen food brands that specialize in shrimp-based meals, so it’s always nice to see one lonesome brand serving that niche.

Of course, not everything they make is filled with seafood. Take, for instance, the Scott & Jon’s Garlic Butter Chicken Rice Bowl, which we’re reviewing today. There’s not a single piece of shrimp in sight! Of course, if you’re looking for a shrimpy version of this same meal, S&J’s has one, and we reviewed it a while back. But today we’re talking about the chicken version.

This is a simple dish to cook. Simply pop it in the microwave for three and a half minutes and it’s good to go. This is a no-fuss meal. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

As you can see in the image above, this meal comes out looking a bit pale. Not only is the rice white, but the chicken looks way lighter than it should. Now, the chicken is actually surprisingly high in quality, with a really great roasted flavor, but it’s also quite scant. The pieces are small and few. With some more chicken, this could have been a standout meal. As is, it’s just okay.

The garlic butter is more subtle than we were expecting, especially after nom-nomming the shrimp version of this dish. In the shrimp meal, we found the garlic to be very potent, while here it almost fades to the background.

Aside from that, you’ve got a few pieces of tomato and some green and yellow peppers. And, of course, a whole ton of rice. It’s all pretty standard stuff, as far as rice bowls are concerned, and that admittedly makes for a rather unexciting meal.

Like the other meals in the Scott & Jon’s line, this is a low-calorie affair. With just 280 calories in a bowl, you won’t feel too guilty about eating this. The sodium is about average for a frozen meal, with 700 mg per serving.

The Scott & Jon’s Garlic Butter Chicken Rice Bowl isn’t anything special, but at least it’s low in calories. It’s not a super-cravable frozen meal or anything, but if you’re just a little bit hungry, this will provide you with a simple solution. Then again, it does seem like S&J’s might be phasing out this meal, so all of this might be moot at this point.
