Trader Joe’s Green Bean Casserole Bites Review

Trader Joe's Green Bean Casserole Bites

Some people like to eat their green beans plain. And that’s totally fine. In fact, if that’s what you want from a pack of frozen green beans, Trader Joe’s has you covered with a plain old bag of them. However, sometimes you want to consume your green beans as part of a greater combination. If you’re in that latter category, Trader Joe’s has you covered there as well, with the Green Bean Casserole Bites, which we’re reviewing today.

Ten of these come in a single box, and they’re laid out in a nice little tray that prevents them from sticking together into one big clump (which might end up happening if these were stored in a bag instead of a tray).

The box lists instructions for both an oven and an air fryer. We don’t have an air fryer in the Freezer Meal Frenzy office (perhaps we should think about picking one up), so we went with the oven today. If you follow our lead, you’ll need to preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, then put the casserole bites onto a baking sheet and bake for 7 to 12 minutes. It’s pretty simple, and we found the sweet spot right around the ten-minute mark. Each casserole bite starts with a crispy fillo cup. This part has a lovely pastry flavor and a flakey consistency that makes each green bean bite a real joy to crunch into.

Of course, the star of this show is the filling, which is mostly made from green beans, mushrooms, cream, and cheddar cheese (with a few other things tossed into the mix as well). And we really found this filling to be tasty! The main part of the flavor portion is mushroom when you first bite into one of these, but that fades into the green bean portion over time. And the cheese portion lends a creamy quality to each bite.

Every bite is topped with crispy fried onion pieces, and this really seals the deal for us. Onion is one of those flavors that tends to enhance the ingredients its mixed with rather than standing out on its own, and that’s exactly what it does here. This addition elevates the overall flavor from pretty darn tasty to full-on craveable.

If you eat just a single piece, you’re looking at 30 calories and 60 mg of sodium. Of course, no one expects you to eat just one, and the serving size listed on the box is all ten bites. If you eat all of them, you’re up to 290 calories and 580 mg of sodium. These numbers aren’t too bad, but keep in mind that this is an appetizer rather than a full meal. If you try to make a meal of this, you’re probably going to end up pretty hungry.

The Trader Joe’s Green Bean Casserole Bites make for an excellent appetizer that’s high in flavor and relatively low in calories. If you’re looking for a fun way to add more green beans to your diet, these casserole bites come highly recommended by the good folks at Freezer Meal Frenzy.
