It’s a scorching hot June day as we’re writing this review. We figured it was as good day as any to check out a tasty frozen dessert, then we remembered we had recently picked up a carton of Trader Joe’s Peanuts for Chocolate Ice Cream! The exclamation point, we should mention, is part of the title, and if the reaction of the TJ’s community is anything to go by, that punctuation is more than earned here.
The carton promises a tasty batch of chocolate ice cream “with Chunks of Chocolate Peanut Butter Joe-Joe’s Cookies & a Peanut Butter Swirl.” Now, that’s a whole lot of stuff for such a tiny batch of ice cream, but if Ben & Jerry’s can do it, so can Trader Joe’s!
We should start off by saying that the chocolate ice cream is absolutely as rich as it looks. This is some extremely flavorful ice cream, and fans of dark chocolate are going to be in frozen heaven with this treat. Just look at that dark and delicious ice cream!
The chocolate ice cream is honestly enough for us to give this dessert high marks, but then there are some mix-ins. You’ve got chunks of Chocolate & Peanut Butter Joe Joe’s cookies, alongside peanut butter swirls. Both of those things work to add a delightful saltiness to the mix. While the peanut-butter flavor is not the primary thing you’ll taste here, it works off of the sweetness of the chocolate in a delightful way. It also adds just a little bit of texture to the otherwise smooth ice cream.
Calorie-counters be warned: One carton of this contains 900 calories. The idea is that you will eat about 1/3 of the container in a sitting and not the whole thing. While this is a small container, the ice cream inside it is remarkably rich, so we think you could probably break this up into four or five servings instead of just three. If you have the willpower to pull that off, you can mitigate a lot of the guilt associated with this product.
The Trader Joe’s Peanuts for Chocolate Ice Cream! is a super-rich, super-cool treat that combines the sweetness of chocolate with the saltiness of peanut butter. Yes, it’s a classic combo, but this still manages to be a unique new twist on the chocolate-meets-peanut-butter formula we all know and love.
