Evol Carnitas Big Burrito Review

Evol Carnitas Big Burrito

For the non-vegetarian staffers at Freezer Meal Frenzy, Evol’s line of Big Burritos has been a wonderful discovery, and the Carnitas Big Burrito is no exception. It offers a mouthwatering blend of spices, rice, beans, and, of course, carnitas.

Like the Sriracha Chicken, the meat content is pretty slim, but also like the Sriracha Chicken, that doesn’t really matter all that much because the rest of the filling is so good.

Surprisingly, the most potent flavor present is the salsa, rich with tomato and pepper, with a bit of cheddar that sort of hides in the background.

This burrito was spicier than we expected. It doesn’t match the Spicy Steak Big Burrito, but it still has a bit of kick to it that came as a pleasant surprise. In the world of frozen food, spicy meals are a rare treat indeed.

With the big burritos, we typically don’t follow the package instructions explicitly. We explained that in our Sriracha Chicken review, but we’ve re-posted our instructions below in case you’re interested in trying it out.

Our preferred method of cooking these things is to pull one out of the freezer the night before and stick it in the fridge to thaw overnight. The next day, we preheat the oven to 350 degrees (Fahrenheit), wrap the burrito in tin foil, set it on a cookie sheet and let it cook for 20-30 minutes. (The Evol site recommends 60 minutes, but we’ve never needed that long.) Remember to flip it when it’s about half done. Using this method, the outside of the burrito gets just a little bit crispy, and the filling doesn’t get quite as watery as it does in the microwave.
