Evol makes some of our favorite frozen foods, but that doesn’t mean their lineup doesn’t have the occasional dud. The Fire Grilled Steak seems like it’s way out on the edge of Evol’s line rather than at its center, so we really weren’t sure what to expect.
Many of the Evol dishes we’ve tried have been pretty skimpy on the meat content, which isn’t usually a big deal. But with the Fire Grilled Steak, the steak is the centerpiece of the meal. The meat itself needs to be worth the price of admission. Thankfully, Evol does alright. There are several strips of steak, and they’re juicy with a great consistency that sort of fights back as you try to chew it. It’s not the melt-in-your-mouth kind of steak; it’s tough, which is what we’d expect from a frozen steak dish.
As you can see in the picture below, this dish is loaded with cilantro. Don’t worry, though, once you stir it a bit, the portion size seems just right. You’ll also notice the cheese floating on the top, but once you stir this dish, it pretty much disappears completely. You’ll forget it’s even there.
The bulk of this dish is black beans and rice. There’s some lime juice mixed in, so the limey flavor really stands out. That might be off-putting to some, but we really enjoy it.
To round it out, there’s also a bit of corn and some bell pepper strips, which don’t get in the way and add a nice bit of veggie content to this dish.
If you eat this dish too fast, you might trick yourself into thinking you’re still hungry. But slow down, and sip a glass of milk. Once it settles in, you’ll feel pretty stuffed. Not bad for a dish with only 400 calories (160 from fat).
With Evol’s Fire Grilled Steak, we really don’t have a lot to complain about. This is a high-quality dish that knocks back that steak craving and only takes a few minutes to cook up. Your freezer could certainly use a couple of these in it.
