Trader Joe’s Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions Second Look

Trader Joe's Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions

Because the Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers eat so much frozen food, we can’t always keep all the dishes we review straight. Case in point, we were convinced that we’d reviewed an entirely different version of the Trader Joe’s Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions — the ones we swear we remember had bacon on top. It doesn’t look like those pastry bites exist, unfortunately. However, this means we picked up another box of the Trader Joe’s Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions, so we decided to give this appetizer another look. (You should still check out our previous review!)

Trader Joe’s expects you to bake these pastries while they’re still in the plastic tray, which always makes us a little nervous! We didn’t have any issues with this batch, but you should make sure you place the tray on top of a baking sheet before you toss this in the oven. Otherwise, you might up dealing with melted plastic.

It took us around 20 minutes to heat these pastries up, which isn’t too bad. You’ll be able to tell when these come out of the oven because they’ll be puffy and nicely browned. We found that the best way to remove these pastry bites from the tray is to scoop them out with a spoon. Last time we made these, our pastries were a mess, but this time around, they wound up looking pretty good!

Of course, if you’re planning to serve these at a party, you’ll want to proceed with caution. These pastries are both tiny and delicious, and it’s easy to wolf down an entire plate yourself. There’s a slight sweetness to the feta cheese that’s the perfect complement to the savory onions. Add in the flaky pastry dough, and you’ve got a taste and texture symphony!

Each pastry bite clocks in at 70 calories, and there are a dozen pastries per box, which means you’ll be taking in a whopping 840 calories if you decide to chomp these down on your own. This is definitely designed to be a treat, not a meal, and we recommend splitting the package with a friend or two. Just make sure there’s enough to go around; you’ll want to have more than one of these bites!

The Trader Joe’s Pastry Bites with Feta Cheese & Caramelized Onions are still absolutely delicious, even though our memories of these pastries were a little off. Now that we’ve figured out how to keep them from falling apart, we can recommend them even more highly. If you’re looking for a party appetizer or a tasty baked snack to enjoy at home, this is a terrific option.
