It’s not all that often that the Freezer Meal Frenzy staff gets to enjoy food in a cone. Sure, we go out for ice cream every once in a while, and our Trader Joe’s adventures have treated us to both mini ice cream cones and cones filled with corn. Still, most of the food we eat is cone-free. When we spotted the Trader Joe’s Mini Cheesecake Cones at our local TJ’s store, we saw an opportunity to add more cones to our diet.
There are four of these treats in a box, which seems pretty reasonable to us. If you’re expecting a full-sized ice cream cone full of cheesecake, you might be disappointed, but we’d say these are a good size. Since the cones aren’t packed individually, you probably won’t want to leave these in your freezer for too long once you tear into the packaging.
The concept of cheesecake filling in a cone is already pretty appealing, but Trader Joe’s really went the extra mile when creating the cones for this treat. This isn’t your standard, run-of-the-mill ice cream cone. These are crunchy almond Florentine cones. They smell heavenly, and they’re good enough to eat plain. They taste a little like an almond-flavored cookie! The cones are glazed, which makes them a little sticky, but that can easily be fixed by holding them with a napkin or a paper towel.
We were slightly concerned that the cheesecake filling would be too sweet, especially when paired with the cookie-like cone. Thankfully, that isn’t an issue at all. The filling is actually made from ricotta cheese, not cream cheese, which means it doesn’t taste that much like cheesecake at all. It’s a light, creamy filling that perfectly complements the crunchy cones.
This is a pretty simple treat, but when you take your first bite, you’ll see that there’s a lot going on here. The cones are pretty thick, and the sweet nutty flavor is incredible. They crumble in your mouth, allowing them to blend perfectly with the fluffy filling. These are pretty decadent, but in spite of that, it’s hard to stop with just one. Since these are 210 calories a serving, you’ll want to make sure you split the box with someone else.
The Trader Joe’s Mini Cheesecake Cones aren’t quite what we expected, but they are addictive and delicious. The almond Florentine cones are really the star of the show here, but the cheesecake filling is amazing too. If you’re craving almond cookies, or if you just want to eat more food in a cone, you should absolutely give this dessert a try.
