Trader Joe’s Misal Curry with Brown Rice Review

Trader Joe's Misal Curry with Brown Rice

Frozen Indian meals are always a treat, and we’ve been particularly impressed with the Indian dishes at Trader Joe’s. From curries to kormas, TJ’s has a great selection of Indian-inspired meals that you can prepare in a matter of minutes.

So when we spotted the Trader Joe’s Misal Curry with Brown Rice, we hoped it would live up to some of our favorite TJ’s meals.

Cooking this meal is a pretty easy process. Heat it in the microwave for four minutes, peel back the film, and give both the rice and curry a good stir. Then just cook it for one or two more minutes, and it’s ready to go. Just make sure you’re careful when removing the film; ours was extremely hot.

While the box does say this is made with a spicy curry sauce, we tend to be wary of frozen foods that claim to be spicy. Still, we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of heat this curry has. It’s not going to leave you gasping for a glass of water, especially if you’re used to eating Indian food, but it’s surprisingly fiery for a frozen Indian meal.

There are a lot of strong flavors here, including cumin, black cardamom, red chili powder, and ginger, but they all come together beautifully.

On top of that, there are plenty of interesting textures too. We really appreciate that this was made with brown rice rather than the standard jasmine or basmati; it was a great match for this curry. Initially, we weren’t sure if we would like the sprouted moth beans — the name isn’t all that appetizing — but we wound up really enjoying them.

The Trader Joe’s Misal Curry with Brown Rice is a flavorful and filling meal that’s destined to become one of our favorites. This doesn’t measure up to the kind of food you’d find at an Indian restaurant, but it’s still a quick, easy, and delicious meal. If you’re a fan of frozen Indian food, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this spicy meal.
