Jimmy Dean Applewood Smoke Chicken Sausage Patty, Egg Whites, Sharp American Cheese Sandwiches on English Muffin Review

Jimmy Dean Applewood Smoke Chicken Sausage Patty, Egg Whites, Sharp American Cheese Sandwiches on English Muffin

We first entered into the Jimmy Dean line of frozen breakfast foods via their breakfast sandwiches. Since then, we ended up discovering that this line was considerably larger than we had initially assumed. This isn’t a bad thing, because it means more breakfast food for us to enjoy. And we certainly love our breakfast food!

We recently came across the Jimmy Dean Applewood Smoke Chicken Sausage Patty, Egg Whites, Sharp American Cheese Sandwiches on English Muffin (whew, what a mouthful), and we were happy to return to the sandwich side of this extensive line. So today we’re digging in to see what these sandwiches are all about.

First off, these are pretty simple to cook. Open up a sandwich, wrap it in a paper towel, then nuke it for a bit. The amount of time the sandwich spends in the microwave will depend on whether you cooked it from frozen or thawed it out first. We tend to thaw ours overnight before we cook them, but when we’re in a pinch, we’ll heat them directly from the freezer. We should point out that the thawed approach leads to a slightly better sandwich. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

The big thing that makes this sandwich tick is the sausage. The Jimmy Dean brand has a long history of providing tasty sausage, and the company rarely disappoints in this department.

In this specific sandwich, the sausage patty is actually a chicken sausage rather than pork or turkey. We have to admit, we wouldn’t have guessed this was chicken if we didn’t already know. This has a slightly subtler flavor than pork (which we’re not sure we would have noticed if we wouldn’t have been inspecting it closely), but it also has a lovely sweetness to it that we really enjoy. This is a top-notch sausage patty!

Of course, the rest of the sandwich doesn’t live up to the high standard set by the meat portion. The English muffin is rubbery (though it tastes fine), the egg white portion is a little watery and bland, and the American cheese is certainly nothing special (we’d always prefer a cheddar to an American for our breakfast foods). None of this is bad, but none of it is as good as the excellent sausage.

The box contains four sandwiches, and each sandwich contains 280 calories and 740 mg of sodium. Those numbers don’t seem all that bad until you realize you could easily eat two of these sandwiches in a single sitting. You’ll need to practice a little bit of restraint here!

The Jimmy Dean Applewood Smoke Chicken Sausage Patty, Egg Whites, Sharp American Cheese Sandwiches on English Muffin are pretty good, though not amazing. The chicken sausage is the best part by a long shot, and the rest of the ingredients range from mediocre (the eggs) to alright (the cheese). While these could certainly be better, they’re still an okay way to start your morning if you don’t have better options (such as the Sweet Earth Farmstand sandwiches).
