Scott & Jon’s Creamy Tomato Basil Tortellini Review

Scott & Jon's Creamy Tomato Basil Tortellini

We were introduced to the Scott & Jon’s brand of frozen food via their shrimp offerings. We like shrimp, and we like frozen food (obviously), so we were pretty impressed by how many shrimp-filled dishes this company makes. But in all that shrimpy goodness, it’s easy to forget that S&J actually makes a lot of non-shrimp options as well.

We’ve already checked out their mac and cheese and pad thai, and today we’re gobbling up the Scott & Jon’s Creamy Tomato Basil Tortellini. So let’s grab a fork and get chomping!

Of course, we must heat this first, and S&J meals tend to be very easy to cook. Simply cut a slit in the film and toss this meal into the microwave for three and a half minutes. Boom. All done. (If you want to read the full cooking instructions straight off the back of the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

So first, let’s clarify: There is no shrimp here. This is a vegetarian-friendly batch of pasta for folks who just aren’t into shrimp.

The sauce here is incredible. It does so much work, blending the earthy spinach-based flavor with something that’s slightly sweet and a little bit creamy. It’s a tightrope walk, for certain, but this dish really makes it work. Plus, the added bell peppers are a nice treat.

We do have one complaint about this: The pasta is a little too chewy. It’s not offensively chewy or anything, but it does feel just a little cheap. This isn’t a huge complaint, but it’s one we thought worth pointing out.

One of the things Scott & Jon’s is really consistent about is making sure their meals are low in calories. This is no exception. With just 290 calories, you can eat a batch of this without feeling any guilt. Then again, the sodium is just a tad bit high, at 790 mg, though this isn’t that much over the average sodium level for a frozen meal (we typically expect a meal like this to weigh in at about 700 mg of sodium). And we should point out here that this isn’t very filling, so you’ll probably pair this dish with something else to complete your meal.

The Scott & Jon’s Creamy Tomato Basil Tortellini is a great batch of tortellini with an incredible sauce. It might not be super filling, but it’s got a dish-scraping flavor that we’re going wild for. If you’ve been hesitant to check out the S&J line because you’re not into shrimp, this is a really great place to jump in.
