Udi’s Chicken Puttanesca Review

Udi's Chicken Puttanesca

Udi’s isn’t always at the top of their game, but they do make a pretty killer gluten-free pasta dish. Well, most of the time. Their Chicken Puttanesca isn’t a bad dish by any means, but it’s certainly not one of Udi’s best.

The gluten-free noodles aren’t the problem. Those are actually really great, as always. The chicken could be a little better, but it’s not bad either. Even the sauce is pretty tasty, and it has a pleasant bit of a bite to it.

So what’s the problem then?

Too much olive. This frozen meal is loaded with black olives, kalamata olives, and manzanilla olives, and then there’s olive oil and extra virgin olive oil thrown in for good measure. You can’t escape the taste of olives in this dish, no matter how hard you try.

Puttanesca is typically an olive-rich dish, so Udi’s choices aren’t without precedent. But the tricky part of all this, we have to admit, is that no one on Freezer Meal Frenzy’s staff is a fan of the taste of olives. No matter who tasted this, the reaction was always the same — too much olive.

If you can’t get enough olive in your life, then you’re probably not going to find a frozen meal more suited to your particular taste. But if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to pass this meal over for something better. And Udi’s has no shortage of excellent frozen pasta in their lineup. Their Pesto Tortellini is wonderful, and the Cheese & Spinach Mezzaluna is pretty great too. In fact, their penne and cheese dishes are fantastic if you’re looking for a great take on mac and cheese. The Chicken Puttanesca, though, just didn’t work for us.
