We know that not everyone loves mushrooms, but the Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers are huge fungi fans. We love mushrooms on just about anything, especially pizza. So of course we’ve been just dying to try Trader Joe’s Mushroom & Black Truffle Flatbread Pizza — and now that we’ve finally had it, we can say that it definitely lives up to all the hype.
If you’re planning on splitting this pizza with someone else, you’ll want to have something on the side. While Trader Joe’s claims there are two servings of pizza per box, half of this pizza isn’t going to fill you up. It’s not much larger than many of the single-serving pizzas we’ve tried.
Thankfully, this pizza makes up for its small size with its incredible flavor. The quality of the mushrooms is extremely high; this definitely tastes like a gourmet meal. The truffle sauce is rich and creamy, but not in an overpowering way. We love the way it blends with the fresh mushrooms and cheese. We were surprised to see that the pizza just used a standard mozzarella cheese — it’s a lot more flavorful than the cheese on your average frozen pizza.
We also really like the flatbread crust. The malted flour gives it a nice crispy texture, and the sunflower seed oil does a lot to enhance the flavor. You’ll definitely want to leave your pizza in the oven for the full 10 minutes recommended on the box; a crust like this is best when it’s crispy.
While we probably won’t split this pizza the next time we eat it, we absolutely do want to try it again. Trader Joe’s Mushroom & Black Truffle Flatbread Pizza is a decadent and delicious pizza. If you’re a mushroom lover, you’ll want to sample this pizza as soon as you can.
