Dishes that are similar to veggie burgers have been a part of Eurasian cuisine for millennia, but the meat-free patties we know and love weren’t created until the 80s. Veggie burgers have evolved tremendously since then, but sometimes, it’s nice to have a classic. Amy’s All American Veggie Burger is a simple patty that serves to fill that niche.
Cooking this little patty is incredibly easy. You can toss it in the microwave for a few minutes, or you can warm it up on your stove. Either way, it won’t be long before you have a patty that’s ready to eat.
In keeping with the patty, we decided to keep things as basic as we could. Instead of loading our burger up with condiments, we tossed it on a whole wheat bun, added a bit of ketchup and mustard, and dug in. Sadly, this burger probably could have used a little something extra.
This is a very plain patty. The texture is solid, and it isn’t at all rubbery, but there is barely any flavor here at all. Instead, the patty takes its taste from whatever you serve it with. If you slather your patty in hummus or serve it with a spicy sauce, it could be pretty tasty. If you don’t add much, then you’ll be left with a plain dish.
There’s definitely a place for a burger like this. We love flavorful condiments, and patties that are already full of flavor won’t necessarily complement those toppings. This burger will taste like anything you put on it; that gives you a lot of flexibility. Still, if you’re unprepared and stick to plain toppings, like we did, you’re going to be stuck with a really dull meal.
As long as you’re aware of this patty’s strengths and shortcomings, you should be able to do a lot with it. Amy’s All American Veggie Burger doesn’t really try to mimic meat, and it’s definitely not attempting to reinvent the veggie burger. It’s just a simple piece of food that can work on all kinds of burgers.
