Breakfast isn’t always a vegan-friendly meal. Foods like eggs, bacon, and sausage are all breakfast staples. If you’re avoiding meat, but still want to enjoy all the pleasures of breakfast, Whole Foods has you covered with their 365 Everyday Value Plant-Based Breakfast Patties.

Each box contains six patties, which are clustered together in plastic. Because of the way the patties are packaged, you might have a little bit of trouble when it comes time to separate them and stick them in the frying pan. Thankfully, we were able to tear two patties apart without too much of an issue.

The cooking process for these is pretty similar to the process for pork-based patties. You simply need to place them in a pan over medium heat and turn them every so often so that they are cooked evenly on both sides. Our patties might look a bit blackened, but we can assure you that they didn’t taste burnt at all.

Whole Foods doesn’t advertise these as faux sausage; they simply refer to them as “breakfast patties.” That’s probably for the best, because even a vegetarian isn’t going to mistake these for the real deal. That might sound like a criticism, but we actually really enjoyed the earthy, savory flavor of these patties. They taste like a plant-based product, and we’re okay with that.

Seasonings like paprika and sea salt keep these patties from feeling overly bland. While they’d probably taste great with ketchup, we chose to eat them plain, and we enjoyed every bite. The patties are fairly thick, but they’re also small, which means you might be tempted to enjoy two or three with your breakfast.

If you’re looking for a meat-free breakfast patty and you’re not looking for an authentic substitute for sausage, 365 Everyday Value Plant-Based Breakfast Patties are perfect. They’re easy to prepare and would make a great complement to all kinds of breakfast dishes.
