The Freezer Meal Frenzy staff just can’t resist sweet potatoes. From Alexia’s amazing fries to Dr. Praeger’s adorable treats to Trader Joe’s amazing gnocchi, sweet potato is something we can’t get enough of. We also love a good tater tot, which is why we were eager to try the 365 Everyday Value Sweet Potato Puffs, which we found at our local Whole Foods store.
Cooking these puffs is pretty simple. Just toss them in the oven for 10 minutes, give them a quick stir, and then heat them for 10 minutes more. That said, you’ll definitely want to make sure you cover your baking sheet in aluminum foil before you toss everything in the oven. Otherwise, you’ll wind up with a big old mess.
Normally, we’d expect a snack like this to get crispy in the oven. Unfortunately, our sweet potatoes turned into a mushy mess. We had a few crispy, perfectly formed tots in the mix, but a good portion of our potatoes had completely fallen apart by the time we took them out of the oven. We really had to scrape these off the baking sheet to get them on our plate, as you can probably tell from the image below.
These don’t taste anything like your standard tot either, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. They really taste like freshly cooked sweet potato, which we love. They’re seasoned with salt, chili pepper, and mustard out of the bag, which means you shouldn’t have to add anything extra — of course, we do think these potatoes would be great with sour cream and chives.
We’re not sure the 365 Everyday Value Sweet Potato Puffs will satisfy your craving for tater tots, but if you’re in the mood for sweet potato, they’re worth a try. They’re pretty sloppy, and there are better frozen sweet potato treats on the market, but even mushy, messy sweet potatoes are hard to pass up.
