Eating Well Breakfast Sausage Scramble Review

Eating Well Breakfast Sausage Scramble

We’ve had some rather unkind words to say about the Eating Well brand in the past. Perhaps our wickedest burn ever was when we said their Spicy Asian Inspired Chicken contained noodles that “look like someone stuck a wet industrial mop head into the freezer.” Savage.

But here’s the thing: we tend to find their trademarked Fresh Seal technology to be a bit of a joke, and despite the vacuum-sealed packaging, their frozen food doesn’t taste any fresher than any other frozen food. In fact, in some cases their food seems worse off for it.

So you may be surprised to see us continuing with this line of frozen food. After all, why would we continue to torment ourselves with food we know beforehand we’re not going to enjoy? Well, we’re nothing if not persistent, and we do believe that our readers deserve to know about the bad stuff. Plus, the Eating Well Breakfast Sausage Scramble, which we’re reviewing today, actually looks pretty darn good, and we’re willing to give Eating Well yet another chance to win us over.

Considering how flat Eating Well meals tend to be, the cook time feels unusually long. You’ll need to microwave this for a total of six and a half minutes. We’re not really sure why, because it comes out absurdly hot. You’ll need to let it cool for quite some time before you start eating if you don’t want to burn your mouth. Perhaps someone in the Eating Well food lab was overly concerned about making sure the sausage cooked all the way through. Eating Well Breakfast Sausage Scramble

Like we expected, this is a small, flat portion of food. What’s here, however, actually looks pretty appealing. It’s not a complex meal; it’s really just a plate of scrambled eggs and sausage in a sauce that smells like ketchup, alongside some bell peppers and chunks of potato. Ideally, you’ll want to stir everything together into a breakfast blend.

The scrambled eggs are rubbery — in fact, these are some of the most rubbery eggs we’ve ever had in a frozen meal. These eggs feel almost fake. Even so, they actually taste pretty good. A lot of frozen scrambled eggs are virtually flavorless, and these ones actually have a rich, eggy taste.

We have pretty much the same comments about the sausage as we do for the eggs — this is great-tasting sausage with a consistency that’s frustratingly rubbery. We do love the spices here, though. The sausage is definitely the component that you’ll taste the strongest here — it’s loaded with flavor.

The potatoes are really inconsistent. Some pieces are mushy and soggy, while others are all dried out. They taste halfway decent, but they’re really nothing to get excited about. We’ve definitely had better potatoes in other frozen meals.

The sauce has a rice wine vinegar base, which might explain the ketchup-y smell, but it still tastes halfway decent. It’s definitely not the sauce we’d have chosen if we were in charge of putting this together, but it does the trick well enough — it provides some extra flavor while offsetting the dryness of some of the ingredients.

Calorie-wise, this meal isn’t too bad. With 300 calories (150 from fat), this is a meal that dieters might find attractive. The sodium is a bit high at 680 mg, but that’s pretty average for a frozen meal.

The Eating Well Breakfast Sausage Scramble is far from perfect. The consistency is way off, but the flavor seems okay. While this isn’t enough to make us feel guilty for some of our meaner burns against Eating Well’s frozen food, it’s a halfway decent microwaveable breakfast that doesn’t have a ton of calories.
