Archer Farms Southwest-Style Chicken Egg Rolls Review

Archer Farms Southwest-Style Chicken Egg Rolls

When you think of egg rolls, you probably don’t imagine southwestern cuisine. Yet the food geniuses at Archer Farms have worked to create Southwest-style egg rolls. Archer Farms, in case you haven’t heard of it, is a Target-exclusive brand of food with a pretty lovely assortment of frozen goods. If you check out the freezer aisle at your local Target, you’re sure to find a whole bunch of it.

Anyway, today we’re thrilled to be trying the Archer Farms Southwest-Style Chicken Egg Rolls, which we’ve had our eyes on for a while.

These egg rolls don’t come with microwave instructions, so you’ll have to bake them in the oven. They do, however, come with a packet of “zesty” southwest ranch sauce, which you’ll need to thaw in a cup of warm water for about ten minutes. (If you want to see the full cooking instructions, check out our package scans at the bottom of this review.)

These egg rolls are seriously tasty, though they remind us more of crispy little burritos than true egg rolls. Inside each one, you’ll find a blend of jalapeño jack cheese, red and green jalapeño peppers, black beans, chicken, corn, and spinach. That’s not egg-roll-y at all, is it?

While these might not hit an acceptable spice level for the true spicy food fanatic, we think these do have a pretty good kick to them. They’ll clear your sinuses and give you a warm, tingly feeling in your belly.

Of course, it’s the sauce that really take these to the next level. It’s a creamy southwest-style ranch that balances out the spice from the jalapeño peppers really nicely. You’ll definitely want to dip these egg rolls in sauce, and the included sauce packet has plenty for all six egg rolls. We still had about 1/3 of the packet left after we had finished all of our food.

The box considers a serving to be two egg rolls, and with sauce that will run you 220 calories (70 from fat). Of course, these are pretty tiny, so we think you could easily eat four of them — or even the whole box — in a sitting. Eating all six brings your calorie count up to 660 (210 from fat), which is much less diet-friendly than the two-piece serving. Keep that in mind when you go back for seconds (and thirds).

The Archer Farms Southwest-Style Chicken Egg Rolls are really good, especially once you add the southwest sauce. If you’ve been meaning to check out the Archer Farms line of frozen food for a while, we think these egg rolls are a pretty good place to start.
