Cauliflower is quickly becoming one of the most popular vegetables in the food world. It’s a surprisingly malleable vegetable that can mimic all kinds of foods, from meat to rice to pizza crust. It’s also nutrient-dense; it’s rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Omega-3 fatty acids, and many other valuable nutrients. It’s also an excellent option for eaters that are adverse to carbs or gluten.

So of course we wanted to see what all the fuss was about, wand this is why we gave Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Gnocchi a try.

This gnocchi can be sautéd, boiled, or cooked in the microwave. We opted to sauté it, and we were fairly happy with the results. Trader Joe’s recommends steaming the gnocchi in a skillet with water, then adding butter and olive oil and cooking until lightly browned. The entire process took a little less than 15 minutes, which isn’t too bad for a frozen meal.

While some Trader Joe’s gnocchi comes heavily seasoned, this gnocchi is fairly plain. According to the packaging, the only seasoning is olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. We added some pepper, a little more olive oil, and some parmesan cheese, and we were definitely happy with the results. This gnocchi would also be great with some tomato sauce or a medley of fresh vegetables.

If you’ve had bad experiences with cauliflower in the past, this meal might not win you over. Since it’s a fairly simple dish, there’s nothing to mask the taste of the cauliflower. Our staffers have mixed opinions on the flavor of cauliflower (one person may have compared it to a butt) but everyone agreed that the texture of this gnocchi is fantastic. It’s light, fluffy, and slightly chewy; it perfectly mimics the consistency and composition of the real thing. We also found it to be incredibly filling; we felt stuffed after eating about half a bowl.

Ultimately, Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Gnocchi is what you make of it. If you don’t season it at all, you might find it to be a bit bland. If you slather it in tomato sauce, you might be able to forget that you’re eating cauliflower. Unlike most frozen meals, this is a dish that’s designed to be customized.

If you’re looking for an ingredient you can use in a meal, this is perfect for you. However, if you’re looking for something that’s fast and easy, you might want to stick with simpler meals.
