If you spend any amount of time looking at lists of the best frozen food at Trader Joe’s (something we do all the time!), then you’ve probably come across the Trader Joe’s Gone Bananas frozen dessert. The box is adorable and the chocolate-covered bananas inside are enticing.
While we do enjoy reading about the best foods at Trader Joe’s, we really can’t comment on them with any authority until we’ve actually tasted them for ourselves. So today we’re finally digging into the Trader Joe’s Gone Bananas! to see what all the fuss is about.
First of all, we should point out that there’s no prep time at all. Simply open the box and start popping these banana chips into your mouth. When we first read these instructions, we thought there must be some mistake; surely these would be too hard to eat unless they thawed a bit? Well, we were wrong. These are soft in the middle, even when pulled directly from the freezer. They’re also the perfect temperature — chilled, but not too cold.
And these are incredibly delicious as well. They’re so good! The banana interiors practically melt in your mouth instantly, leaving behind the slower-melting dark chocolate. You get the blast of banana fruitiness, followed by the slow melt of the rich dark chocolate. It’s a two-step flavor profile that is practically magic. We really can’t get enough of these!
While no dessert comes completely free from guilt, these ones are actually diet-friendly. If you stick with the box’s recommended four pieces, you’re only taking in 100 calories and 20 mg of sodium. That’s 25 calories per piece! It’s really hard to find a more delectable dessert with fewer calories than that.
There’s a reason the Trader Joe’s Gone Bananas! are on lists of the best frozen food at Trader Joe’s: they’re perfect. This dessert is simple, delicious, and low in calories. What more could you ask for?
