Trader Joe’s has an abundant supply of frozen food in its store aisles, from pastas to burgers to seasonal treats. With so much good dinnertime eatin’, we sometimes forget all about dessert. But you should never forget about dessert — especially when you’re wandering the Trader Joe’s freezer aisle. There are some darn good desserts there.
Take the mochi, for instance. Trader Joe’s offers a pretty decent variety of mochi, and we want to try all of them. So today, we’re checking out the Trader Joe’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Mochi, which is a frozen treat with an incredible premise.
One box contains six mochi balls, and these are kept in a plastic tray so they don’t end up freezing together into a clump.
So what exactly is mochi? Well, mochi is a Japanese rice-based food product, where rice is smashed into an almost gelatin-like substance (this process actually originated in China).
The mochi treats we’re trying today are actually ice cream inside of a rice dough shell. We’ve tried a few different varieties of these so far, but the peanut-butter-and-chocolate variety recently caught our eye. These are made of a chocolate outer shell filled with peanut butter ice cream. They’re a little bit like a Japanese frozen spin on Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
And actually, the flavor reminds us a bit of Reese’s Puffs cereal (if that exists anymore). The ice cream portion is rich with a sweet peanut-butter taste, which sort of dominates the flavor profile here. The mochi shell has a bit of a chocolate flavor to it, but it’s pretty subtle. Still, these are an absolute treat. They’re fantastic!
One piece of mochi contains 90 calories, which means you can probably justify eating a couple in a sitting without tossing your diet out the window. We definitely appreciate having low-cal dessert options!
The Trader Joe’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Mochi might be our favorite Trader Joe’s mochi yet. It’s delicious, and the texture and consistency work really well with the flavor combo. These are seriously addictive!
