Trader Joe’s Salted Maple Ice Cream Review

Trader Joe's Salted Maple Ice Cream

As we’re getting into the fall season here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, we’ve been tasting a whole bunch of fall-tastic foods from both Trader Joe’s and Aldi. Since we gave Aldi’s ice cream a try recently, we figured it’s only fair that we check out TJ’s fall ice cream as well.

So today is the day we check out the Trader Joe’s Salted Maple Ice Cream, which we’re quite enthusiastic about. As it turns out, we might be kind of lucky to have even found any, as people on reddit are reporting difficulties picking up a batch of this stuff. It seems wildly popular. So let’s dig into this creamy treat to see if the flavor matches those high expectations.

Basically, what you’ve got here is a double helping of maple goodness, with a maple-based ice cream that’s decorated with salted maple swirls. And we have to say, this stuff is incredibly sweet and rich. The maple flavor hits right away, sending your taste buds up to frozen heaven, and then the salted maple swirl hits to take just the tiniest edge off of that sweetness.

We have to admit, though, the carton does overemphasize the salt level here. As big fans of salted caramel coffee drinks, we are used to a little more salt with our sweetness. The salt level here pales in comparison. If you want something on the sweeter side, you’ll find a lot to love here. However, if the salt was the major selling point for you, this might not live up to your expectations.

Now, this is a fall ice cream, so we’re pretty sure you know this already, but it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t a low-calorie affair. The carton recommends about 1/3 of the container as a serving. If you eat that much, you’ll be knocking back 280 calories. If you somehow eat the whole carton in one sitting, you’ll be up to 850 calories. Then again, because of how sweet this is, we think you probably will be able to put it down before you overindulge. That sweetness sort of accumulates as you eat it, and you’ll hit a point where it’s just too much.

Or maybe you’ll just add a little sea salt to tamp that down.

The Trader Joe’s Salted Maple Ice Cream is a fantastic dessert that we’re really happy to have gotten to try this year. Our one note (write this down, Trader Joe’s), is that we think the maple swirls could have been a little saltier. But even as is, this is a seriously craveable ice cream.
